I can't see why it would have to auto-patch anything. It was my understanding that the only difference between TG-16 HuCards and PC Engine HuCards is that the ordering of the pins is different (and thus neither region's games will work on an unmodified console from the other region without the correct adapter to rearrange the relevant pins). There's nothing region-specific in the software though, unless I'm mistaken.
PC Engine does have an issue with TG-16 games. TG-16 games will not work on PCE even with adapter, you need to hack the console a bit by lifting certain pin and grounding it, or edit the ROM image if you're using flash card or Everdrive. TG-16 console do not have problem playing PCE games with converter. Everdrive has a switch that flips the data to make the game work on either consoles without modifying the pins or using adapter.
Oh yeah, now that everyone mentions the details, I think I had seen something like that. I wonder though, are there any TG16-only games (that aren't just very thorough localizations of Japanese titles)?
Only some mediocre American titles. I believe Darkwing Duck, Talespin, and Yo Bro. No software was developed for the failed PAL TG16. There isn't even one single known line of PAL program code in a TG16 game.
