I did it for XBOX I did it for Dreamcast, Now I'm going to do it for Saturn. With Gaming going to Shit my OG XBOX, Dreamcast and Saturn have become my go to systems when I want something new/different. We went over hidden gems for the Dreamcast and XBOX but how about the Saturn? Doesn't matter US, Japan, Euro I can play them all so shoot. Under the Radar Saturn Games. So far all I can really mention are Robo Pit and Robotica. Robotica is.......Unique that's for sure.
Well, what genres are you interested in? Would feel a bit rude to spew a long list without knowing what you're looking for genre-wise.
I'm down for RPGs but....I'd need a translation. Shooters I'm set I know what's good and what isn't. Fighters I'm also set for I know what's good and what to avoid. So knocking out Fighters, RPGs and Shmups you can go from there. Alot of people here are knowledgeable about Saturn games but there are probably 100s that haven't been mentioned, even here.
Puyo Puyo and the like. Nice quick diversions. Megaman 8 and X4 while good, cost far too much on US Saturn given alternatives. JPN Saturn is cheaper. Common US PSX versions even less than that.
I hope you're not going to blindly trust some top ten lists from the kool kidz sites when it comes to shmups and fighters.. Anyway, I'll name some fun titles that don't get much recognition. Wing Arms, Steep Slope Sliders and Vatlva. (had to edit my post with firefox because this forum really hates chromium for some reason.. or the other way around)
Gradius Deluxe Pack. Very solid straight forward ports of old school shmups. The collection's first half not originally localized. If you thought Gradius III&IV was missing something, this is it. Other options are the Parodius games, Salamander...
Yakumo is my main man when it comes to those things. I just watch his Retrocore specials on Saturn shooters and Fighters. We see eye to 90% of the time I think. I've seen Mega man 8 going for $700 new on Ebay and Amazon... INSANITY Japanese Saturn all there for those, infact They're on the radar for what I get next
Oh there are far too many Saturn games that western gamers don't know about. Too many to list here. Tecmo make a fantastic puzzle game called Deron Dero Dero. Or at least I think that's what it was called. Just check out my site's Saturn page under "D" and you'll soon find it. Yakumo
Deep Fear. Basically a Resident Evil clone to the core but is a pretty good play if you like the first Resident Evil. Very import friendly or you could import the PAL version or get a modchip and burn a copy of the NTSC-U prototype that never saw release.
Here's a shot of my ISO folder Assume these are the only games I know about. Considering what's in this folder I think I already have a good checklist to work with But Alot of these are just crap so.... (Then again these weren't played in a fully authentic Saturn Experience) My Physical collection is 15 games (VF2, VFR, Toshinden URA, Virtua Cop, Daytona USA, Daytona CE, Fighters Megamix, Dodonpachi, Saturn Bomberman, Sonic Jam (Japan), Groove on Fight, F1 Challenge, Sega Rally, Robotica and Robo Pit) I Already see a good number of games here that I'm going to buy physical copies of. Even with all those I STILL don't think I'm scraching the Saturn surface.
Konami Antiques MSX Collection is a great pickup. I am never going to own an MSX setup or start buying MSX games, so this was a great buy. Note that this was released on PS1 spread across 3 discs, but on Saturn you get all of the games on 1 disc. Far more convenient, cheaper, and easier to acquire all in 1 buy.
Culdcept, Keio 2, Clockwork Knight 2, Syukudai ga Tant-R (and the other puzzle&action games), Torico (Lunacy), Side Pocket 2, most SEGA AGES discs, Gun Griffon 2, GameWorks vol 1 (for the Ejihon Detective game), Gals Panic SS, Gussun Oyoyo, O-Chan no Oekaki logic, Worms..
Who knows. Japan has more than enough cheap games. Speaking of that I'm looking forward to my region mod. Modchip alone in this Saturn. Finally get the backup RAM cart working, only to be greeted with a familiar error message with US Street Fighter Collection disc 1. lol
Seems like. Which is why I didn't even bother. Half of the experience of experiencing an old system is tracking stuff down and taking chances. If you're just downloading shit you ain't got no soul.
