I wont waste time on the back story...
But I have most of my gaming stuff in climate-controlled self-storage. About three days ago I went in to find a good portion of it marred by water damage. I'm not sure how the water got in, it's just all over everything. Luckily it's pretty much just cases. Until a moment ago when I found my snes/n64 tub soaking in this greasy water.

This means that I have a high potential of simply losing games like Megaman 7/X-X3, Secret of Mana, and Ocarina of Time.
It's not even the games I'll miss. It's all the wasted saves and the time and effort put forth to not only play them, but to pack them away, catalouged and all.

The manager said there's no evidence that it was her fault. Despite her claims she had the A/C repaired and the roof examined. I still think she could have at least offered her condolences and perhaps a free month.
I never got an apology or anything.

So the value of everything I own has just plummeted and I went into my storage just to see what could be sold. What's worse is that I figured the value of everything wasn't worth the insurance. This leads me to figure I actually could have saved money just giving it all away, since it was $62 a month for a 5x5 unit.

It's odd though, I made a bunch of bags of moisture absorbing things, that I change once a month to avoid these situations. They were all reduced to almost 1/10 of what I put in them and they looked like wet sand. Only thing I can figure is that the A/C brought a lot of moist air, but damn it must have been overwhelming... Everything was fine when I checked on December 4.

For the moment I can't even look at a video game. This new year better be friggin great. SOL

Fuck that, you sue the company and make it stick! You can prove it's their fault, right? Faulty aircon, fixed roof and so on. The items are in their care, too bloody right it's their problem. Don't let this go. I sure as hell wouldn't if it was my stuff.

Yeah... check your contract/T&C, then get legal advice.

    Wow, that sucks...
Definitely make sure they pay for this. It's their full responsibility to keep the place safe.

That's always the policy; it's NEVER their fault. Like said, make a claim.

    1. Did you purchase insurance?
    2. Touch nothing that is damaged
    3. get a lawyer

    Wow this is uplifting!

Assembler: 1)I didn't want the insurance since I assumed it would be fine in her care.

    2) I have a bag full of damaged goods, but I still have other boxes in the unit. One of which is full of Ps2 games, DVDs and a pair of nib dreamcast controllers.
I don't think I would make an awesome amount so what would you guess is a good price?

I have to go to Moore's square in Raleigh anyway to catch the bus for school and the courthouse is right across the street. This is probably going to be a small claims court issue, but what kind of lawyer should I find? If they're fresh out of law school they would be cheaper, but what type of lawyer is that? I've only heard of malpractice attorneys and the like.

ASAP i'll post pics of what the damage has currently done, hopefully I can borrow my bro's camera.

You need to first read the legalese on the contract for the storage,
and you wouldn't be able to go after the storage at all if you waived
    your right to more insurance.

Who you would be going after is the repair company, you would
need to get the info from the storage

Depending on where you live, you have certain rights or lack or them
    regarding your stored goods.

I agree with getting a lawyer.

Also, for future reference, you should always plastic box your collection just in case.

On the one hand, I hope the legal shit can work out in your favor. Since I have no idea what that means, I can't comment further.

Really, though, it's BULLSHIT that you store your stuff in a "container" and then the elements find their way into that container. I was under the impression that people used secure storage because they didn't want all their valuable stuff sitting outside in the elements. Basically, they didn't provide what they offer as a service in my opinion. I would think insurance would be for security, not quality.

Well, as wimpy as this may sound I guess it's not worth the trouble of actually going down and paying for a lawyer. Luckily it was only a Pokemon Emerald and Minish Cap box. I can replace those.

What worries me though is the case that took the most soaking was filled about a centimeter deep in whatever it was and that case ended up being filled with Nintendo, SNES, and N64 games. They're now wrapped in paper towels after drying off for 2 days.

I've checked Mario Kart 64, and Pokemon Stadium 1/2. They all work. This leaves the SNES and NES games. I know we're all aware that water causes copper to rust and these are the games I used to blow out, anyway. I don't know if I can replace the pins on the cartridges themselves. It was only the carts that got caught in "it." Luckily my DVD's and Ps2 games were saved from this.

Everything on the bottom of my stack didn't get anywhere near the water...

I guess i'll check them all and see if they work. The point of moving them out of storage was to see what I could sell them for. I have some sentimental attachment to those generations and I might end up keeping them anyway.

I'll probably sell the more recent games here and on eBay in the weeks coming. I have a lot of pictures to take.

    Thanks for your support everyone!

Unfortunately, I can't offer you any better advice than what's already been said.

I'm moving to Raleigh on Friday, though, and if you want I can spread the bad word about this place. I'd like to know the name for my own sake, as I have a bunch of stuff I'm moving around and if I have to resort to third-party storage I'd rather not go somewhere that obviously doesn't care about their clientele's satisfaction.

e: Out of curiosity (and you can PM me the answer to this if you want), do you go to NCSU?

No, right now i'm getting cheap credits at Wake Tech, but I think at the end of next year i'll be able to move on comfortably to either NC State or UNC Charlotte.

My brother went to state though. He started the Comedy In Action club or something like that. He always referred to it as the CIA... He was big in Stand-up comedy at Charlie Goodnights and Improv at ComedyWorx.

If you send a legal paper with intent to seek damage they will close out of court under $1500 for sure.

You can also go to small claims, if they don't show, you win.
