I bought a PSOne at my local swapmeet recently for $5 bucks. It turns on and all, but it doesn't read disks. I did get it to BARELY play a music cd in the cd player menu thingo. I opened it up for fun and found this: Sorry for the image quality, couldn't get camera to focus on it properly. The small chip that the blue wires (most) are leading to says "12C508/P 04 SAW 0032" if that helps. The one that the greens are leading too doesn't seem well secured, so I think it must be a mod chip. any extra info on this setup appreciated. thanks.
4-wire modchip with BIOS patch chip. The 4wire chip might be installed wrong, main reason why it doesn't read games.
It changes the boot sector code and overrides. I think. For example: SCEE SCEI SCEA Oh, as for it not booting games jinn is correct. If it has not been installed correctly then it will not read. Otherwise, it may be your laser.
Clean the lens with a qtip dipped into some rubbing alcohol if you have some around. In a pinch I've used *good* vodka as the cheaper stuff tends to have impurities. Afterwards you can mix in a little orange juice... If cleaning the lens doesn't do it I'd make an attempt at adjusting the laser's power output. It isn't for the feint of heart and is easy to botch if you don't take the time to measure the POT as you go being sure to adjust it ONLY as high as absolutely required. In the case that neither works I'm sure someone here can sell you a spare laser, Jinn somehow has been able to find brand new lasers for the older grey models. Should be compatible with PSOnes I'd imagine.
Im sorry... ...WHAT? I think alcohol on the eye, and compressed air on the laser diode and reflectors itself is fine.
Oh. The way he typed it made it sound to mix in with the vodka orange juice to clean the laser...............................
ive used similar to clean consoles when i was hammered, not the best idea but worked and you could drink it while you work......bonus!
Late versions of the PlayStation BIOS do check the CRC of the PlayStation logo, including the copyright text. If it doesn't like what it finds, it just checks again, effectively locking the system on a loop which in turn causes an black screen. Bios patching is supposed to cause the system to skip the checking.
I'll clean the laser first and then try to find some guides and resolder it or something. Cheers for the help guys.
It looks like a 4-wire chip. Here are the install diagrams for a 4-wire chip 3 wires fro chip to board and 1 link wire from a to b on board
