I used a Japanese keyboard to bring up the DEBUG / USER menu. From there you can access everything including editing stuff and saving it however I need a mouse to access any of the edit functions so I ordered one from Amazon today. It should arrive tomorrow or Thursday.

Awesome as hell! So do you need a JPN keyboard for this? Any particular button combos? Do you need the S3 button to initially activate stuff? I was trying out my US keyboard and wasn't able to get any responses. Please experiment some more and tell us what you find. I'm this close to buying the jp keyboard/mouse ;) And what's this - you can save things? Is there data saved to the vmu, or is it saved for the duration you have Geist booted up and it hasn't crashed?

To access the DEBUG/USER menu you need the S3 button. S1 and S2 put a red line marker on the screen. The menu is pretty easy to use. From the DEBUG/USER menu you press either D or U which will take you in to each option. There you can select many other options that bring up edit windows and so on BUT you need a mouse to use these. So I can't actually edit anything or save anything yet. There's also a stage select that will load stage 3 with debug info, editor and so on but still no graphics.

Also, the game now continues when you die with the DEBUG options showing.

I've been messing about with the audio files. they're is a crazy format called ADP which is a type of ADPCM. I've managed to open them however they play really slow so they must be speeded up by x2.8 to sound normal speed. Also there's a lot of clipping in the audio and the overall quality is very poor. Saying that I have found this track that I don't remember from the game. I've made a MP3 of it. Check it out. Remember the quality is really poor. - http://www.segagagadomain.com/TRACK01.mp3

the 1st stage music can also be accessed in two different files but I've yet to find a way to open the speech files. Also, the MIFF files won't open with any MIFF compatible viewer so I have no idea how to view any art in this game.

I was the first to mention the S3 button dark told you about. I cant use this feature on the usa seganet keyboard and the mouse it is unresponsive so far and i am using the Japanese skeleton keyboard and mouse combo. I am also using a pre-retail pal katana bios overclocked to 240mhz and can play the first two levels perfectly with the rebuilt image we made as it is leaps above performance wise of the pressed retail disk.

    ugh. an annoying bug.

Our main dude keeps saying "yatta" every 5 seconds, even over the dialogue.

Also, I can confirm that the US mouse is worthless. The small JP keyboard works great though.

The mouse must work since the debug boxes are the same as those found in the betas of REZ. I'll let you know how I get on when the mouse appears. The goal is to load all data on the disc. There are speech files for every level so there must be a way to access them.

Yes i have a build with custom sort with all the level files placed together using a hacked NullDC that tells you what files are called upon and when but even then it only marginally makes a difference. And i have tried to get the mouse to do something with every configuration i could think of but i get no response not even using emulation so best of luck to you as i hope you figure it out as i can see all the options you speak of but are unresponsive.

Do either of your keyboards, Yakumo and Atreyu - have a numeric keypad? It's complete speculation, but maybe a numeric keypad would help scroll through the menus or modify settings, if no other buttons on the keyboard seem to do so. I don't suppose you could press tab or alt-tab and put the different menus in focus like in Windows

    EDIT:
Here are some keyboard combos for the Rez beta, Vibes, for the debug menus.
    http://www.x-cult.org/games/102/REZ/4366/Beta_Commands/
Some additional info and screens on Vibes' debug mode for reference

Additional speculation - once you bring up the menus, could you navigate the menus and modify values with a second DC controller plugged into another slot?

On my way home and will happily test that for you. I have the Japanese skeleton keyboard and mouse for Japanese Typing of the Dead and i also have a Seganet keyboard & standard mouse for the USA region i will test both for you.

I have the same keyboard as atreyu187 and the same mouse too by the sounds of it. Well, actually, my mouse hasn't arrived yet. I hope the REZ commands work on Geist. That would really help us out.

atreyu187, have you found away to view the MIFF art files? No program will open them. Why on earth did they choose such an odd format?

Going at it now give me a little while and I will happily report back. I never saw the U or D to activate and I am rolling through it now but the system crashed. Kinda glad I bought that clear shell for my system to get everything clear or I wouldn't have this keyboard and mouse to try any of this out to bad someone stole my clear "Seaman" VMU and I don't have the $40+ for one. Anyhow I am gonna play with K-Project after this now.

    EDIT

I see Miff files and also a Miff player but can't access it just yet just showing directory structure.

Even with PC programs that can view miff files you'll have no luck with those on the Geist disc. They're in some odd format by the looks of it just like the audio files.

Still no mouse but I've found a few interesting facts.

This is stage 4 as we all see it.

Now look what happens when the editor is switched on. There are buildings!

Also I managed to get almost to the top of that hill we all get stuck on and guess what? Yep, there is more stage behind that point.

I think it will be possible to access the rest of this stage through the editor. We just need to look deeper.

Oh by the way, you can control the ships weapons with the keyboard. Most effective is the "Z" key which is rapid fire! All the other controls apart from directions are also available via keys. One very hand key is F1. this will give you 9999 shield points!! F12 is a suicide button which will instantly kill you.

Cool discoveries guys! Especially stage 4! I've updated the controls thread with some of the key definitions mentioned offhand (F1, F12, Z). Also interesting that the debug stuff mentions the mouse axis. Hopefully the mouse will work out somehow.

The f numeric keys and what they do is all i figured out last night. Real life hasnt given more then an hour a day to play around with the game and that is if the child isnt up. What I was in reference to was f12 would blow up your ship as i hit that when i was fighting the first level boss. Im going to at least post some pics of the menu screens tonight via vga as you can see so much more over composite but i will not be home for a few more hours.
