Reading an old italian magazine (from September 1996) I've found an interview with Yuji Naka where he says (I translate): "Before reaching the final version (of Nights) we've made some others that are funny. It would be interesting to show them to the public. We made at least five versions, and no one looks like the final one that, form me, is the better of them all." No pics are shown. It would be interesting to find something more.
From hacking, there is the reminants of a debug mode left in NiGHTS, no way to enable it though, from the text, it had lots of rather cool options...I'll see if I can digg it up...
There was a debug code for NiGHTS, but it only worked on pre-release copies of the game, such as those sent to magazines for reviews. From what I can remember, one of its many features allowed you to play with the chip-generated sound in a similar way to the bonus sound museum option as found in the later Christmas NiGHTS sampler. Does anybody have further information, since this remains something of a mystery to even the most "hardcore" (damn, I hate using that term!) of NiGHTS fans! Also, has a debug-enabled version ever been found or even released for analysis? I'm sure there's somebody somewhere that still has a copy...
Speaking of hacking Nights, i've heard that someone managed to extract the model and texture data from the game. Any truth to this?
Yes, SANiK did, I am good friends with him And no, a debug enabled copy of NiGHTS was never found. Edit: here is what was found Code: - DREAM CONFIG - TIME-UNLIMITED : DEBUG-CONTROL : INFO-FLAG : DISP-POSITION : - SYSTEM CONFIG - TIME-UNLIMITED : CAMERA-CONTROL : EDIT ENV.LIGHT : DEBUG-CONTROL : DEMO-RECORD : MARE-BONUS PTS : MARE-EXCHANGE : MARE-BONUS TIME: TIME-BONUS : PIA-EXCHANGE : PAUSE-INFO : VS-V-SPLIT : ALIFE-EDIT : ACRO-DA(OLD) : INFO-FLAG : FULL-REPLAY : Seems to be related to builds that were marked "Pre-Final", in particular, one og the date: 'INFO-FLAG :ÿ FULL-REPLAY :þ € @ÀON þOFFþ PREFINAL 13,JUN.1996þ'
I hacked into my NiGHTS CD and extracted some nice resolution bitmaps. To do so, it requires a pulse, and a CD-Rom Drive.
