I have made a large folder here, which contains tons of sketches of early / cut Colossi, in-game screens of said cut Colossi, and just some art in general from the art book. I kept the artbook stuff in there, since I figured some of you guys would want it. http://www.megaupload.com/?d=V9MS86T4 The following images are smaller versions of the ones in the link. For the notable cut Colossi, some of them clearly look like early versions of existing ones, but a few of them are a whole other ball game. For example, there is a Monkey type colossus, that clings to stalactites in (im assuming) a cave like environment. Sketch In-game model There is only one cave to my knowledge in SOTC, and thats the desert one. There may be a hidden one somewhere that I haven't found yet, however. Then there's this guy, who looks like a giant chicken.:icon_bigg A gargoyle type monster sketch In-game model A strange looking Spider monster Early concept of Dormin, before he took on a more monstrous form. And this Colossus, I nicknamed him "Ed Bighead" from the Rocko's Modern Life show. There are a few more, but these were the ones that really stood out and were totally different from the rest. There are several variations in sketches on the Monkey Colossus, like they were really considering using it, but cut it out at the last minute. A lot of the rest, I think, are early versions of existing Colossi. I don't think this is even close to complete, however, because I have heard that over ~20~ Colossi were cut from the game, including one so tall, you had to jump on top of its shoulders from the gigantic bridge!h:
Nice! I'd never seen the "chicken" colossi before. Thanks for posting the images. I wonder if there's any evidence of these Colossi in the finished build of the game?
Yeah thank you very much for these. Would love to see a next-gen sequel of some variety for this game. Best of the un-used colossi for me was that one with the giant neck. Truly massive. I know that the included colossi were pretty damn big, but I would have loved to see a scarily huge one.
I love that game, but it seems half empty. It's like they realized that it was better in it's simple form. I often wonder if certain areas had more activity, like the grassy graveyard area with the path down the side to..nothing.
There is a little gap you can cross down there to get to the lower areas of the map, but thats it. There are a few save points along the way. As for conspicuous places, I saw an area just past the forested places that looks like a place where a Colossus WOULD have been if it weren't cut out. It was under a fruit tree, iirc. Also, oncr you get the cloth of desperation (something I have yet to do, since I've played SOTC so many many times, and Hard mode is frustrating) you can reach all sorts of normally unreachable areas, which is pretty cool. I think the whole premise of "Less is more" is Ok for SOTC, but.....I would have liked for there to have been a lot more activity, if you know what I mean. I think they should have kept most of their cut ones in the game.
Yes, at some point, there were non-colossi enemies that you would encounter on the way to each battle, but they were obviously scrapped. I'm not sure how far into it they got with that idea. Anyways, I don't think more colossi would've been a bad idea, but they game is really well balanced. Like w/ Ico, they get down to what makes a game -- gameplay. No bullshit pop music, no really, really gay story. For that, I applaud them.
The land seems denuded, and likely by the giants. It makes sense. There's a lot of hidden stuff I am sure...
