Is possible to put the xbox hdd in an old pc that i have, insert also a spare 80gbyte ide hdd and clone/upgrade my xbox like this. I would prefer not to do the hot swap thingy with my xbox. Also i would like to keep an image of the disk just in case that the hdd kicks the bucket.
Make a XBOXHDM disc with your EEPROM. Back it up with various tools like EVOX. Upgrade by using a PC with IDE by plugging in your Hard Disk (80GB) and after building the drive from scratch, lock it with the EEPROM you have backed up with EVOX by using locking tools on XBOXHDM. If you want to clone it directly, you can use Chimp, I've never done this myself but it appears to be rather easy. You'll need a Ysplitter cable or another XBOX to power the drive.
I have a hard drive adaptor called Xport which allows me to backup my xbox 360 HDD to my PC, and able to write to a new drive if I wanted. I think the software I use is called Party Buffalo but there are many others. To be honest I have no use for it anymore as it only works on the older 360 hard drives and I've got a slim now. EDIT: Just realised your talking about the original xbox sorry.
