Okay, so I have now managed to install Coinops 4 on my modified crystal xbox, it has xecuter and 200GB hard drive. Seems like some of the Coinops games run great but not nearly all and I´m thinking about possibly upgrading the hardware in it some time early next year. I suppose coinops is one of the apps which can benefit from more ram and faster cpu. If I got this right, for doubling the ram I would just need another xbox and take the ram from it, but as for upgrading the cpu I know very little. How easily available are better cpus for original xbox and how much would they cost? What is the exact model I should be looking for? I wish they would make coinops for pc, would be great. Mame is okay though but this coinops ui is super sweet with all the video introductions in menu, super simple setup (just unpack, ftp transfer to xbox and seems like it´s done).
The CPU upgrade is nearly impossible unless your an electronics surgeon. Most of us here aren't that good. CPU replacement involves "ball grid soldering". Google it if confused. That's very hard to do by hand.
The most worthwhile upgrade is the memory upgrade. You need a version 1.0-1.5 motherboard that has the extra "sockets," (for lack of a better word.) Here is probably the best deal you can get on the chips: http://www.dynatron.org/store/#xbox products You should have some experience with SMD soldering, and here is a video tutorial on the mod: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vi3Bi2i2bEg The CPU upgrade shouldn't be taken as lightly. THE UPGRADED CPU DOES BREAK SEVERAL ORIGINAL XBOX GAMES. You have to get the work done professionally: http://www.gamestron.com/enhancedxbox.html or more popularly, contact the user "trusty" on Xbox-Scene. It does give many emulators the extra kick (like those ripped in CoinOPS) and it makes the Yabause port quite a bit more useful.
Trusty seems to be losing interest in doing the mod as of late. Not sure why but he appears to be somewhat difficult to get ahold of.
