I am looking to invest in an upscaler so I can play my older systems (saturn, nes, snes, dreamcast etc.). I was wondering which one is worth my money, I found some suggestions in this thread http://assemblergames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=23201&highlight=upscaling
I have a LCD tv and the games just look horrible on it. I would love to find a solution so I do not have to heft my old tv in my room and find a way to set it up.

What do you expect us to say that wasn't said in the other thread?

haha yeaaaa, I guess what I need to know is a place to find one and what sort of results can I expect? I tried to find videos and pictures and really not much luck of a before and after. I hooked my SNES up to my tv through svideo and composite and it was still somewhat blurry and a bit jumpy. I think all I really needed was to hear somebody tell me that if I drop a hunk of change on it that it will be worth it .

XRGB-2 is the best one. You'll need to get Japanese RGB cables for your systems though.

Yep just reread the thread and noticed this link http://retrogaming.hazard-city.de/
It pretty much makes this thread totally useless and makes me feel like a pretty big tard. Sorry about that I am having one of those unobservent and completely ignorant days :-X

Whew so I need the upscaler, Japanese RGB for my DC,Saturn,Snes,N64 etc. Does it output to my tv with component? I only have hdmi, component, svideo and composite on my lcd. Oh and just the xrgb-2 or the plus?

Wait, you have S-video? Just use that.

To be honest, old consoles look crap on modern TVs. You're far better having an old TV or (if you're in America and have no RGB TV) an RGB monitor (e.g. Amiga monitor or old Sony pro broadcast monitor).

I have ran some of them through s-video and it looks horrible and it's kind of laggy. I have a nice tube that I can set up with svideo and component hook ups. I would like to have everything ran into one tv so as not to clutter up the room with something else.

I almost created a thread asking the same question. I'm thinking of just looking around for a CRT TV but of course they are hard to find in my area. Even if I had to deal with an online source I just want a TV in the 27"-32" range with 480P and widescreen support. Samsung carried a 27" back in the day I almost bought just for my GameCube but I passed on it in favor of my LCD. Wish I would have just bought both. If I have to go the route of purchasing an upscalling device I'm fine with that but finding a place that sells the good brands is tough.

XRGB-3. Throw some cash at Yakumo, and never need anything else again.

Haha I like how you put that and I will take your word for it. So you say I will need a Japanese RGB cable? I have an American LCD with only HDMI component and s-video what will be the input? Also since I am going to be on a buying spree what would be the best connections for a Dreamcast,genesis/segacd,snes,n64,saturn? In return for your answers and typing I will give you my thanks, and my wookie life debt.

Edit:I found this while snooping around. http://wolfart.altervista.org/index.htm

The XRGB-3 outputs DVI, which you should easily be able to convert to HDMI I think.

Genesis/Sega CD, probably just composite video. A PAL RGB cable exists but I haven't been able to get it to work when I hooked it up via an E->J SCART converter cable. Micomsoft also supposedly made a Genesis S-video adapter but I've never seen one.
SNES, there's an official Japanese RGB cable which you can probably find on auction sites. This is what I use my XRGB-3's single SCART port for.
N64, just the standard Nintendo S-video cable which you can order from them.
Can't help you with the others.

Thanks for the answer! I have a dvi to hdmi cable, I use one hooked up to my pc so I can use it on my tv. I picked up a extra because they were so cheap.

For PS1 and PS2, a XRGB-3 would do the "trick"? Not that i going to buy it anyway, just curious.

For the DC, you will be in a bit of trouble since there is no 1st party Japanese RGB cable (for some weird reason) although the system supports it. If the XRGB3 has DSUB15 input (anyone? anyone?) you can use a VGA box and *I THINK* still get 240p games from the 3-4 that have it, and good 480p from the rest.

There's a first party RGB cable for the Saturn but apparently has some noise. I got a 3rd party (homemade actually) which is nice.

1st part SNES should be fine. The N64 doesn't support RGB that I know of. I'm not so knowledgeable on the system though.

Systems you will have trouble with but should still own:
    -PC-Engine (all variants)

Yeah, it has two D inputs.

Why's that? I have a Duo and it seems to just run regular composite video, though I haven't tried running it through the XRGB3.

the n64 can do RGB on some models if you do a very very simple mod.

B/c it's doesn't support RGB w/o a hard mod (not an easy one either).

Does it have the same connector as the SFC/GC?

Same connector. Not a SUPER easy mod, they're fine pins, multiple wires. Also the issue of many/most? consoles not including the RGB DAC... Since the N64 has a discrete DAC it's entirely possible to digitally upscan the video too, now that would be a worthwhile mod, otherwise I'd just stick with S-video. The majority of games are 240 lines with heavy interpolation so the image is crap however you view it.

There are so many cables I need to order, I think my entertainment system will be swallowed whole. I just hope after all this work the pay off will be worth it.
