Sorry to start one of these up again, but after meandering about a few game shops here in sunny Hawaii, I've come to the conclusion that a teeny-tiny disc inside a big ass box is a complete waste of space and plastic. The only upside I can see is if you have a DVD rack, but even still, the smaller boxes allow you to store them just about anywhere. Surprised they don't put GBA games in DVD cases too! Now I'm off to hug some trees.
Like I said. The bigger, the better. It makes the buyer feel that its worth that $50 for the game since it comes in a big case but then they open it and find a small disc. Anyway, another good reason is the DVD rack. The PS2, Xbox and GC games can fit in them so you won't end up like you did with the cartridges of old systems, having to put them in boxes or lie around getting dust.
They could just put them in cd cases though so you could put them on a cd rack .... save even more space. Something liek the dc white label promo acclaim clams would do the trick.
Again. Its all about IMAGE!! the PS2 and XBOX come in DVD cases and it makes them look "up to date". The average american consumer (aka idiot) would think that if it came in a CD like case, then its inferior because they would think back to the PSX when the games came out on CD cases. This stuff is marketing research thats what they do and thus why Nintendo would pay the extra $1 to have it in a DVD size case.
This is acutally true, if they would have used the same cases they used in japan theres no way in hell the average person would take it seriously, also its to make people know that the system is just as good as the rest and not weak(think back to what madhatter said when i say this). Plus its also for storage reasons, since it would be ridiculess to try to store it in a differenct way. Trust me, it is definetly for marketing reasons.
PLUS, with the DVD-size cases, they have that nifty memory card holder! :smt023 ...which I don't think a single person I know uses.
There's no question in my mind it's for marketing... still doesn't make i a brilliant idea though. I think Sony really screwed up as well not only by starting it, but by going from CD cases to DVD cases. Just an all around bad idea, namely b/c every PS2 manual I have looks damaged out of the case.
You're right about that. Sony is the one who started it :smt043 . But then before the PS2 came out, the DVDs came out in the same cases all games nowadays do. At least they are not the size of Saturn Game cases :smt043
Damn right it's about marketing. I've thought that before as well. GC is already "behind" on the count that it's kiddy; it doesn't need to be considered last gen as well. I, for one, funking hate the GC cases. They have the ugliest internal design, and just plain suck. I like DVD cases--the PS2 ones--but unfortunatley, the plastic scratches really easy. :smt067 Those Microsoft bastards, ruining my "collection" (too small to be that!) with their fugly ass green cases! :smt043 Quick fact--a GC case actually weighs a bit more than a PS2/ Xbox case. I believe. Does anyone else find the Nintendo Precautions Booklets funny? By now, you'd think people were plenty cautioned! Good ol' Ninty, keeping everyone safe! :smt043 :smt043 :smt043
let's not blame next gen for the problem...last I remembered the Sega Master and Genesis games were plenty huge and heavy in plastic!! that was 15 years ago...this isn't something new.....Sony (although I'm not taking up for them) didn't kill the planet in plastic.....there could have easily been a small slip cover like Nes for the early Sega games....but I really don't mind....would rather use a manmade material than innocent little trees... ;-)
Personally, I prefer the quality DVD cases over the CD cases. The CD cases crack and get scratched up way to easily for me. I like the XBOX cases the best. I think the green, or silver for the "Platinum Hits", is a "fresh twist" from the plain old gray and black.
maybe it would be too much to ask industry to put some armour coating on the disc itself so it won't get scratched and etc. instead of spending money to come up with new case design...
Bingo. My computer 15 years ago was fucking MASSIVE! Vacuum cleaner... cell phone. Just about everything back then related to electronics was bigger... including the media that it was on (in the GC disc case at least0. You know what... they made it compact, small -- something my room was dying for. In an age now where people are buying 10's and 100's of games... youd' think one of the execs would realize that smaller would be better. I still can't wait to see how big the box for Nintendo DS software is.
Aren't Japanese GC cases made of cardboard like those for previous Ninty systems? Boy I hate that, boxed MD games are 100 times easier to find than boxed NES games :smt071
Japanese Game Cube games come in small plastic cases that also have a memory card holder so there goes the excuse for using a DVD box :smt042 The plastic cases come with a card slip case that goes over them. You can't expect Nintendo not to add some card here and there :-D Yakumo
LOL! Actually, I think Animal Crossing (which came bundled with a Memory Card) is the only game that I know of where I actually used that holder!
Yeah, the JPN side of Nintendo kinda screwed up in the "we're not going to spend money on packaging" sense, and the US side on "we're going to over do it in a BIG way!".
