Looking to expand my PS1 collection.

Off the top of my head there's

    Einhander
    G-Darius
    Gekeoh Shooting king (Shienryu)
    Philosoma
    Ray Crisis
    R types
    R-type Delta
    Thunder Force V
    That bastardized version of Gunbird

    Any that I'm missing?

You can add Xevious 3-d, Raystorm, Raiden Project and Strikers 1945. That's looking at my "collection" regarding US releases beyond what you have listed.

    Edit: My collection being roms.

PS1 Emulation, perhaps the only form that can be better than the real thing. Now by default I actually use real game discs when Emulating PSX

I'll look into those Especally Raiden Project since Raiden II isn't properly emulated yet.

Gekioh is so tempting just because it's cheaper than getting Shienryu for Saturn.

    and yeah Angel Eyes is.......interesting.

Yes, I enjoyed the fighting arena spring board mechanic of Super-Muscle-Bomber and thought it was an interesting fighter/wrestler hyrbid, but Angel Eyes , Wonderful~ I now base my life's philosophy on it's.....

No, I most likely will never play it again, but wanted to shout out that I enjoy the fact that you run through a fair amount of obscure games. Actually Angel Eyes has a gameplay style which is common with many mediocre fighters streaming out of Japan in the mid 90's, with shoddy graphics and cartoonish almost homemade character designs. What set Angel Eyes apart , as you had pointed out in the video, was the contrasting design implementation between the traditional pixel art characters and those few characters who stood out with faux polygon art design. It was bizarre as if two incomplete fighter games were thrown together and meshed to complete a work deadline. Yeah, it's a schizophrenic game with it's sassy broken hodge podge outcome. The gameplay mechanics were stiff and the overall theme was vague, topped off with a title "Angel Eyes". Yeah.

Yeah, why be like everyone else. Obscure is the name of my game. I'm planing some, Interesting things for the next episode. I still haven't decided which version of Ikaruga I'm tackling.

Any list this thread comes up with will affect what games I have on the show. I'd be pretty awesome to do an episode or two just on US released PS1 Shmups. Plus, having just picked up Thunder Force V today It's something that interests me.

Thankfully Darius Gaiden for PS1 was only released in Japan. It's a bad port. The Saturn version was way better as I recall. Gradius Gaiden and Raiden Project are awesome. Definitely games worth playing.

No, I don't. G-Darius and Darius Gaiden are two different games. G-Darius is 3D. Darius Gaiden is 2D and looks awesome in the arcade and on the Saturn. The PS version is shitty though.

Somewhat off topic but I got around to playing the Japanese release Shmup , Soukyuu Gurentai -Oubushutsugeki and it's incredible.

First, the gameplay reminds me of a 2-D hybrid of Raiden and Raycrisis with a touch of Mars Matrix in the enemy designs and a gameplay mechanic that allows multiple targeting. If Raiden had gone a different direction, adapting and evolving with the polygon craze era of shmups, this would be it, but without polygons, instead using mode 7 type scaling and zoom features to give the sense of depth within the game level space.

The graphics are very well done with lots of scaling and 3-D effect moments without losing the very clear 2-D design. The Bosses are great and in between each level is a graphic cgi movie showing your boss blowing up within real world placement.

The difficulty is perfectly balanced. The hit area for the ship is very small, similar to a cave release and allows for tricky maneuvering through bullet hell type patterns. The bullet patterns aren't full on bullet hell but are quite numerous, especially for when this Shmup released.

I highly suggest playing this, even if it's just an ISO. Frankly a quality experience. Again, balanced difficulty and many neat touches and effects.

I suppose this is a mini review but giving the shout out as I was impressed. There are a lot of so-so shumps on the PS1 to wade through outside of the confirmed hits and this one is a sleeper.

Soukyuu is absolutely amazing. The PS1 version features an extra ship, but is technically inferior to the Sega Saturn version (makes sense, as it was originally an ST-V game).

The graphics on this shooter are breathtaking and only topped by the outstanding music and sound effects. An absolute masterpiece I think, and often a bit underrated because not so many people like to play it on score (and thus, on 1 credit clear)!! Granted, the scoring system is a bit fucked up (you are basically not allowed to use your vulcan shot at all), but once you got used to it, it's still quite fun.

You sir, have great taste and knowledge of product. Regarding my statement about perfect balance, I suppose yes it's on the easier side, especially due to the credit allowance, but I still found myself getting a vigorous workout and experiencing moments of being lost in the game. I haven't beaten it yet, so there is still more pleasure to savor out of this title. Clearing on one credit is presently beyond my capabilities, but regarding this title, I found the feeling of fun, which reflects balance, as I wasn't getting my ass kicked over and over again and yet, I didn't sail through it.

Perhaps this is a great Shmup for neophytes to cut their teeth on. To get the shmup virus loaded into their brain. This could be an aged elder ambassador to Shmupia , the country whose skies are riddled with orange bullets.

I'm a big fan of Sokyogaruntai. I have the Saturn version and play it from time to time.

Hey Godofhardcore, do you know if a modded Saturn can play back up games. I am locked out of Saturn content because the emulators available aren't very good. I am thinking about taking the plunge and buying a Saturn as I keep reading about great game content. I once owned a Saturn and basically had only domestic titles but still loved the system. Aesthetically, I was attracted more to the Saturn than the PS1 and the pixel quality was superior in my view. What I don't want is to spend hundreds trying to get a few of the good games.

Also, have you used any of the Saturn emulators and if so, have you had much success? I haven't but perhaps I am missing something.

SSF is actually good now, not perfect but I'd say most games work with it.

I just borrowed Einhander from my friend. I haven't had time to play it yet, but I'll probably give it a spin on my SCPH-1001 later. I also just bought Croc.
