Hey guys, Just won a jp super famicom on eBay. I'm cool with jp games but it would be handy to be able to also play us games on it. I figure the main/ only obstacle is the different cart shape. Would this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Universal...deo_Games_JS&hash=item256c90e9c3#ht_789wt_922 let me do that? If not, can anyone advise on an adaptor that would allow me to do so? Cheers!
It might. I doubt they'd region code such a thing. As you've noticed... By far most SNES adapters were built for the PAL market. Not that they won't work on NTSC systems. Just good luck finding much variety outside Europe! Hence there's surprisingly few straight through US<->JPN ones. Despite the 1:1 design it'd have. I guess nobody cares. After all, that could be said about why you don't see Satellaview adapters for the US SNES. Of course best is an adapter connecting all pins. Super FX, SA-1, Super Game Boy, Megaman X2/3 among other special chips use it.
Most adapters will work fine for most games. But as Lum says if the two side pin connections used by certain cartridges are not connected you'll be unable to play some games. Even if it does it's possible that noise or signal interference/degrading can cause issues.
Yes you'll need one with Super FX compatibility, as mentioned it has to have the extra pins on the sides of the main edge connector (they are on the Universal Adapter - Expert Version). You could always ask the seller to inspect it for you. When using the adapter you'd have to plug in another NTSC cart on the back, and then the game you want to play on the top.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Super-Nin...deo_Games_JS&hash=item256c9f29d6#ht_500wt_922 Is this the same thing? So i assume you put in a game from the correct region, and the game you want to play?
Oh and im not terribly fussed about superfx compatibility. Its coming with SMW2, and the only other game i'll plump for is Starfox. Thanks for the heads up on that though appreciated!
The second link clearly lacks the extra pins for Super FX. The most notable games that need the extra pins are Mega Man X2 & X3, Super Mario RPG, Kirby's Dreamland 3, Kirby's Superstar, Super FX games including Star Fox, Stunt Race FX, Vortex, Doom, Super Mario World 2. I'm not sure if Metal Combat needs it, but if you don't have a Super Scope, don't worry. Close to 99% of cartridges will work with these primitive adapters.
A US SNES and SFC are both the same inside. If you take the casing off a SFC it will play US SNES game without any adaptor. The only thing stopping the game from playing is the ugly US Block style cartridge not fitting in to the machine. As others have said, you need to buy a bridge adaptor that has the extra pins for SFX games if you really want to play everything. If not, then a normal bridge adaptor will work. You DO NOT need an action replay or any converter than needs you to put two cartridges in to the system. Yakumo
I agree that a bridge adapter is the best solution, but for obvious reasons they are not as common here as the Action Replay type adapters. The only real difference with the Action Replay's is that the pins for the lockout chip are diverted off to the cartridge slot on the back, so in theory just sticking another NTSC cart on there will make it work like a normal bridge adapter. I guess with a bit of soldering it can be permanently turned into a bridge adapter.
I'm fairly certain the Action Replay, atleast the one I have I know is like this, doesn't need anything in the back slot if the top cart is the same region (ntsc or pal) as your console. It's ONLY if one is NTSC and one is PAL, the one correct for your system goes in the back. And my AR is a PAL (German) version but again it works fine with just a NTSC cart in the top on my NTSC system. Even a bridge type adapter by the way, could introduce electrical problems with some carts that have coprocessor chips in them. I believe the Capcom Cx4 has some minor glitches when running through the Action Replay which more than likely passes the two extra edge connectors straight through but the added distance and transition probably degrades the signal or introduces noise. So really, for best results, plug carts directly into the system is at all possible. But with 99% of games it won't matter since it is just a slow ROM memory and maybe SRAM. It's the carts with processors inside them that are sensitive.
