Hey guys, i finally bought one US Super Nintendo from a another friend and it turned out that it has a little bit worse video quality compared to my japanese Super Famicom. So it's that's normal how all US Snes looked like? Screenshot http://imgur.com/9daxVWE,F0HIYmP#0 Video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bLJeQb89krs&feature=youtu.be So is there a way to fix the quality in the US SNES or can i just swap the boards inside of these two consoles? My SFC is heavily yellowed and i don't have the time or the equipment to remove the yellowing or cut the plastic so that i can play US games on it. I found some weird stuff about 1CHIP Snes and people were praising it, but i think my Super Famicom might actually have that chip inside of it, if there's anyone who knows this stuff please help me Oh and i'm just using normal composite cables on both consoles Edit Also i noticed that it also has a weird yellowed line in the middle and some weird interferences as well
Some may get confused, could you help identify which is super nes and which is famicom. Never owned a SFC interesting research thanks.
First one is from the Super Famicom and the 2nd one is from the US Super Nintendo. EDIT More screencaps http://imgur.com/a/yKJBS
You should open both up and see what is written on the mainboard(like SNS-1CHIP-CPU-01). Would be interesting which is which.
The easiest way to get better video out of your SNES is to NOT use composite signal. The older SNES are known to have a blurrier picture than the newer 1chip model. But when Using S-video I find that even the older SNES are plenty sharp enough, and I actually feel that the colors on the old one are slightly deeper, which I like. So Its all a question of personal tastes, but try to use a better signal before considering modding or replacing.
I'd never knew the difference between it's video quality before! I guess ya learn new things everyday lol
i find my snes puts out pretty decent RF, better than composite for some weird reason, but obviously not as good as RGB if you can, use RGB
Is there way to identify which model is this SNES without opening it? It's missing that locking mechanic and the eject button doesn't have the white text. EDIT According to this http://kyorune.com/modding/article.php?id=13 this SNES should have the smaller board inside of it
AFAIK the only reliable way to tell what SNES you have is to open it. There are more than two board revisions. I guess by "big board" he means the first revisions with separate sound board. I usually can tell those just by the weight of the console But there are more than one kind of "small boards"
If you're interested in board swapping, both the SNES and Super Fami are totally interchangeable in that regard.
The SFC doesn't have better video quality than the SNES, because they SFC and SNES are the exact same machine other than minor details. Your video quality may not be great due to a number of reasons. You could have damaged or failing components somewhere. You could have a bad video cable. You could have a bad power supply maybe. And as people mentioned there are multiple SNES board revisions. Some may have better video quality than others via composite. The best thing to do is to use S-Video or RGB if possible.
Post the serial numbers of both machines. I've owned a lot of SNES/SFC, but I've definitely noticed newer models (1CHIP etc) have a cleaner/brighter video output whereas the more blurred/dull picture is reminiscent of the very earliest models. This isn't definitive by any means but goes along with what I've seen.
