Wikipedia (yes... I know :banghead states: I've never seen a SGB2 that doesn't look like a JP/UK-shaped model (rounded bottom). Any light to shed on this? Just curious.
My guess is they are probably wrong, since if it was a mail order item it most likely would have been listed in Nintendo Power, and considering no one has mentioned this being in Nintendo Power before, I'll bet Wikipedia is wrong.
Yes. I've found plenty of other sites that state the same information about it, so wikipedia isn't alone.
But you've not thought that the other sites may just be copying Wikipedia, I'm forever smacking writers who get information from the internets which I can prove is wrong but as some idiot has written the information on Wikipedia and lots of websites lazy copy it.... As far as I know the SGB2 was only released in Japan...
Yes, very true. It just seemed odd that despite a supposed mail-order release, I can't find ANYTHING about it other than that.
It's sad that you'll find "lots of information" when you search and then you realize that it's the same paragraphs copied and pasted on a dozen different sites. And as you said it doesn't even seem to matter to anyone if the information isn't true or is flat out BS.
I'm still really curious at why this information, when assumed false, would appear anyway. Do people literally make these things up, or was it a mistranslation/miscommunication/misinterpretation?
You know, it's like Chinese whispers. Some kid or magazine somewhere writes: "The Super Game Boy 2 is out in Japan. No news as to whether it will appear in the States." then the jaws start yapping: I hope the SGB2 comes out in the States. --> The SGB2 might come out in the States --> The SGB2 is coming out in the States --> The SGB2 is definitely coming out in the States, but in limited numbers --> The SGB2 is definitely coming out in the States, but only available by mail order --> The SGB2 is out now, but only available on the Home Shopping Network --> The SGB was released only on the Home Shopping Network so it's ultra rare --> The SGB is worth at least $200, unboxed --> etc, etc.
as far as I know this was only released in Japan and the magazine clearly said that "there is no word of its release anywhere else but for japan."
I emailed my contact at Nintendo Japan and he said that the Super Gameboy 2 was only ever released in Japan. However he did say a few prototypes were made for internal testing in the US, but due to discontinue the SNES for 1999, they decided not to release it.
btw, you can add the link port to the first Super Game Boy adapter: http://mbrandel.vizionaires.net/?page_id=156
I ve tried to on some occasions, but somehow it always gets edited again by some smart-ass or some asshole moderator.
