I built a PC for a friend of mine and all is working great apart from one problem. The USB ports don't seem to recognize certain things. The mouse and keyboard work fine as does the 1Seg Digital TV tuner. These all run through USB. However if you pull out the mouse during using XP then plug it back in, the PC won't recognize it at all which results in me having to reset the PC. Another problem is that the PC won't recognize ANY external USB Hard Drive, USB Pen Drive or Printer (running through USB). Nothing at all happens when these are plugged in apart from the power LED lighting up on the USB Pen Drive. I know 100% that all USB ports are working (4 on the back and 2 on the front) because I've tried the mouse in all of them. Does anyone have any idea what's going wrong? The OS is Windows XP Professional edition with SP2 installed. CPU is a P4 at 2.8GHz and 1gb memory. Yakumo
Funny enough I had this problem... couldn't use USB floppy drives, hard drives and suchlike. http://geekswithblogs.net/raylinder/archive/2007/12/23/note-to-self-kb941600-is-pure-usb-evil.aspx Has more information but you'll find that uninstalling KB941600 will probably solve the problem... (Although I found that I couldn't unmount USB drives or memory cards, still minor problem just set them to Quick Removal and then you can just pull them out...).
Use a different powersupply. See if that helps any. I had a similar problem but with my PS-2 ports suddenly going offline and not working. After extensive troubleshooting, replacing the powersupply with a new one fixed the problem. Before you do any of that, make sure you have Service Pack 2...
Well it turned out that I had to remove ALL USB drivers like Jamtex sugested. After doing that stuff like USB Pen Drives and HDs could be seen by the PC and worked.!! How when I removed the drives? Still they now work and the Printer is also working. Thanks for the help guys ! yakumo
