Just got a bargain laptop from my office...old stock clearing out, not great spec but hey "the price was right" Was a whole £5 :smt045 Doesn`t have a CD Drive Runs WIN98 at the moment and has USB port...... Anyone know the best/cheapest place to get a USB drive....pref CD-RW/DVD...but I would take anything if it was cheap enough
What brand/specs is it? Certainly my kind of price anyway! :-D Try Komplett.co.uk or Dabs if you're looking for new stuff. I dunno much about external CD/DVD drives - I know NEC make good internal ones though, and they're not too pricey either.

USB 1.1 (and for what it's worth Firewire) CD-RW drives can be had for dirt cheap on ebay actually, often cheaper than just an enclosure alone. Then you could swap out the drive itself with a DVD/CD-RW or DVD-ROM as needed. However, as your laptop would only support USB 1.1, you're limited to using CD recording speeds of 4x. I would recommend a USB2.0/Firewire combo PCMCIA card something like this one and an enclosure of either type if that's too limiting.
I'd go with tobita and get a pcmcia usb2.0 or firewire card and buy one of those extrenal 5.25 usb2.0/firewire bays and mount a dvd-writer shouldn't be more then 30 euro's for a bay about 20-ish for a pcmcia card and 40-50 for dvd writer so you'd be burning dvd's on the go for <100 euro's
