You'd need a swap trick to run a game from a DVD-R. The exploit can be used to load a program like "CogSwap Loader" that is designed for the very purpose. But it requires a fliptop case or slide card to swap the discs unknowingly to the system. It's better just to use the HDD, if you want save DVD-R backups for archivial reasons and so you could reinstall it on the harddrive later if needed. If you come across a game that won't load from the HDD, then maybe you might look into the swap trick for DVD-Rs.
But Johnny said that the software he recommends can launch ELF files from several diffrent locations including DVD. It doesnt have to be a selfbooting copy of the game, I was just wondering if I could put the games image on a DVD and boot it? Or are the games not in that foarmt (elf?) Thanks!
uLaunchELF can load ELF files from pretty much every way possible. Memory Card (mc0:/ and mc1:/), CD or DVD (cdfs:/), PC through FTP (host:/), USB (MASS:/) and HD (hdd0:/). You can also return to the PS2 original browser or load a disc but i don't think it can load backups on unmodded consoles. It also has a filebrowser (so you can pretty much "surf" the whole filesystem from any of those devices, and copy, cut, paste, rename,or delete any file, create new directories and partitions,...).
ok I have been following Pikkons link guide he sent me but I cant get me flash drive to let me copy the data to my PS2 mem card. I have teh files I need to put on the card already on the pen drive. I then run my MAX drive pro software and select USB drive but it says theres nothing on the pen drive. In the guide he says theres another way to copy from USB to Mem card and has a link to the Gamebeef site. however when I click the link its dead. Does anyone know of another way to get the files to the card?
Here try this http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/2/109289 Its a guide called INSTALLING MC EXPLOIT USING AR MAX/EVO CD Just scroll down on the link and you will find it.Also if you still cant get it to work than I can copy the exploit to my memory card and convert over for you.
Thanks pikkon but where can I get the save creator thing at? I have a Action Replay Max EVO without the pen drive. But I have several other USB drives that used to work fine with it. Can you link me to a place to get that save builder software he says you need? Thanks!
Here you go. http://www.ps2savetools.com/download.php?op=viewdownloaddetails&lid=74&ttitle=PS2_Save_Builder
Thats what this was boiling down to from the start lol. I actually asked because I have a slimline PS2 as well as a fat one. I know that you cant use the HDD with the slim ones unless you soldier in the connector and that only works on early models. I was hoping that I could get 2 mem cards and have the exploit work just from the card on the slimline to boot the DVD-R copies. However apparntly that will not work so no dice. Thanks alot pikkon. I will post back if I need more help getting this worked out.
Keep the 'how do I make my FF12 copy to boot, I mean back-up' topics somewhere else where its more appropriate, like PSXForums. Talking about exploits to get homebrew to boot is fine but to explicitly specify you want to do it for 'backups' that you have is kinda frowned upon by the most of us since a lot of us are against flat-out piracy. Just don't specify why you want to know such things ;-)
Yeah, I know lol. I never said I wanted to pirate anything. He just commented above that he knew this would be boiling down to piracy. I explained why I asked about the blank DVD thing. All I ment with that post, is that these kinda things are always hovering around that topic and its not really a suprise that most can be taken that way. I didnt mean any offense, sorry to anyone I made mad.
Well the PS2 HDLoader has legitimate use because disc loading is painfully slow, and many lasers are of poor quality, so it definitely is a plus to store your games on a harddisk and load them from it rather than getting out your discs and having those annoying load times. Perhaps if you're clumsy or prone to ruining discs it would prolong the life of your disc by not handling it so much. But I'm sure lots of people just use it as a replacement for a modchip.
If you want to solder an IDE connector on, you'll need a pre-V14 version. Basically an SCPH-70000. The SCPH-75001 and SCPH-75002 are V14 and don't have the right points. This page sells a kit, and suggests it needs a particular modchip to achieve. Here is a US equivalent. The install diagram can be found here.
