I think there is a point in every true gamer's life where they wish to create their own worlds, express their own ideas and creativity like the great developers and programmers creations that we have witnessed firsthand. Or maybe you want to create custom content for an already existing game engine, or just edit what is already there.

Basically, if you have ever modified a game, mapped your own levels, made custom skins for anything, or even made an entire engine based off your own conceptualization, beginner or seasoned pro, then share here!

I have always loved Half-life, and around 2000 or so, I decided to take a stab at making a custom level. Needless to say, it was awful. I tried learning the tools based off trial and error, and I didn't get the results I wanted, but every so often I would pick myself up and try again.

When HL2 came around (Hell, even when the beta leaked) I was already mapping for it. The updates and new features made old tasks such as making mountains/hills (which was very time consuming) a breeze.

I was in love, and have been since. Thats why I decided to tackle my own mod, a one man project, and it has already taken a tole on me!
Some features of my solo project so far...
-Fully-Coded Jetpack (needs sound, jet fx, and to drain suit power)
    -Wall Jumping
-A Money System complete with stores along the way (purchasable weapons and abilities!)
    -Leveling/EXP system
-Health Recharge that can also be leveled up
    -RPJ (Rocket Propelled Jump!)
-Many many tweaks and changes with more to come!

Here is a video of a map that I have been working at for the past 3 days. (23 seconds in, tiny nod to the best forums ever!;-))

Excuse the darkness, as fraps made it that way.
And excuse the fact that I am not the best mapper in the world, just someone who loves a game enough to waste vast amounts of time on it.
Here are some random screens of a few maps.

These next two pics scare me just because I know its my house! (full recreated, even neighbors houses are properly modeled as they are on my street, but all still WIP)(also, will take comparison shots later)

And a tiny nod to Borat!

All WIP! Now that I have shared my love, please share yours!

EDIT: Also, as I continue with this mod, I cant help but feel my locations have been done sooooo many times in tons of games, such as subways, or sewers, or anything. I recently started to create my local movie theater, and wondered, what places would you like to see in a game? I would love to do something like Wal*Mart, but it would require so many textures and models that I just don't have.
So any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks again!

Nice, very nice. I used to love messing around with WorldCraft (was that it's name...the editor before Hammer?) when I was a kid.

I still play with a lot of CS maps in Unity for my current game in progress but it's hard to find decent BSP editors and conversion tools that work on Mac. I'm forever having to jump from my Windows 7 partition and back again.

I once made a 007 mod for HL1 but it's long lost in the depths of time.

I also used to participate in the Sonic Fan Game community and came up with this: A game based on the UK's Sonic the Comic. Sadly the code for this is also lost.

The framerate kinda kills the running action :/

Looks very promising. I would love to see the rocket pack and the shop parts. Any chance of a video?

I made some CS maps in the past. I made a Cathedral rescue map, but my computer HDD crashed and I lost it all. I have never tried to make a map since.

    Thanks a lot Karsten! ;-)

Yeah Worldcraft was the old Hammer, and you mention CS maps in Unity? How did you manage to convert them to the unity engine? Or were these custom remakes? I downloaded Unity around 2 months ago to see how complex and efficient it was, made a tiny sample game and gave up when I ran into some problems, but it seems like a pretty sweet program.

Was your Sonic game built in Unity? I see WED in the bar of the program you launch it in, which I am guessing is World Editor, which I am again assuming that's part of unity.

As you said, the framerate looks pretty bad,(was this due to being unoptimized?) but other than that it looks like it had potential. Were all the animations done by yourself? Liking the floating movement a la Super Sonic style! ;-)

Here is some pics of my own remake (That I have long give up on), take a guess what game its from, hahaha.

Thanks, The shop parts are far from finalized, right now I just have a VGUI Panel that will open (but not close! AHH! Coding can be a bitch) and all of the buy functions work and take away cash, but I have yet to decide on if my shop should be something like a Borderlands style vending machine thing, or a random guy who appears everywhere like in RE4, or something else altogether.

As for the Jet Pack, sure, Ill make a vid of me messing around. Ill show off the RPJ as well.

And sorry to hear about the HDD crash, it happens to most of us. I have lost countless maps to such failures, sure can be a let down.

Ha, why did I know you would ask this? =] That, and I just don't feel like renewing my Gold. Still reaching it up I see? Give em' an extra bagging for me would ya?

2013? Holy hot damn! You lucky bastard, lemme guess, purchased a ton of 12 months on amazon when they were super cheap?

And I recently just updated my PC for way cheaper then I thought it would be, and I can run Dead Space 2 full settings! Im telling you, update your PC, PC gaming is where its at! Plus, you'll just love your computer even more! Mine boots up so fast now, I never even knew it was possible!

And damn, you know we will. We aren't MLG pro players for nothing!

    @CrAzY

Sonic isn't floating. At full framerate his legs spin and blur which mimics the original games.

What you see in the video was made in 2004. I lost the source code last year :-(

It was made in 3D Gamestudio using the tools they provided, coded in C.

For CS maps in Unity I convert the .BSP's to .OBJ and then to .3DS. Then on the Mac side of things I use the Autodesk FBX convertor to convert them to FBX or DFX with baked in textures and UV Maps.

They will then go into unity but texture placement is hit and miss.

Wanted to show off something I thought was neat that the Source engine is capable of (with some minor coding), full motion video textures!

Shows off the Jet Pack just a little as well as obtainable money. ;-)

I always wondered why she was called Zero Suit Samus. She obviously has *one* suit on. False advertising!
