Yea, then you're unfortunately out of luck at this moment.

Replace? No, you just start OPL and enable HDD mode. Then you can start your game from it.

Choose the external option, and select your game icon. Some games had multiple releases, but use the same game ID for saves. The result is that the game ID does not match the savedata's game ID.

Okay, I've started up OPL and set "HDD Mode" to "automatic" but I'm still getting a black screen when I try and start it via the PS2's HDD browser. Do I need to have OPL saved somewhere on the HDD or something?

I've got the external option, but some some weird reason, Chulip's save doesn't appear in the list. I've got all the other games, EXCEPT for it!

No, you're supposed to use OPL to start the game (Ignore the browser). :/
As I wrote above, I need to update HDLGameInstaller to install a newer version of the OPL core into all of your games... but that's put on an indefinite hold for now.

Oh, dang. Is this still the case even if I used the PSBB OS?

Yes. HDLGaneInstaller will install the OPL core into every game, hence allowing them to be bootable. These games are actually still unable to support the HDD unit on their own.

Hence also why I suggested that you could use a fully copy of OPL, until the core that HDLGameInstaller installs is updated.

Oh well, I guess I'll wait for the update then, since I'd probably only really use HDD installation for stuff like hacked un-dub games. Though I'm tempted to use it for Chulip, since this disk buzzes like an angry swarm of bees when it loads data.

Is there anything else interesting I can do with a HDD unit? What about stuff that was only available digitally on the PlayStation Broadband service? Are there apps, digital downloads stuff like that that's interesting?

Install Linux PS2 (Beta release) on PS2 HDD. This is the most interesting. :)

While it's pretty wild to be able to run a pc OS on a console, it's not very practical for me since I have no use for Linux.

Maybe some brave soul could port Windows to the PS2. That would be pretty awesome.

And if so, someone should program a PS2 emulator for it :p

Running a PS2 emulator in a version of Windows running on a PS2. That definitely falls into the "Because I can" category. I've heard of versions of DOSBox running in DOS before so why not do that to the PS2.

A more wacky option would be to program a PS2 emulator for the PS2. Now THAT would be hilarious!

Hold on I have a 37000 with Matrix Intinity. You can run BB Navi with the chip. I installed BB navi with a fresh out of the box US LInux hdd. When you boot the system it is a race between the chip and BB Navi. If there is a disc in the drive the chip should win, but doesn't always.

I can't give you an answer to this, sorry. I've not worked with a lot of chips.
But they're what they are: modchips. It strongly depends on how they work and what they do - which there are no standards for.

Other members will have to share their user-experience.

The chip technically always wins because it's always tampering with the BOOT ROM, since power-on. You're fortunate to have a chip that works with browsers other than the one in your console's ROM.

No modchip could possibly work with PSBBN because it replaces the PS2 kernel in EE RAM with the Montavista Linux kernel... So nope. No modchips while using PSBBN. At all.

If you re-read the thread you will see that's exactly what SP193 suggested. I just explained why one cannot use a modchip with PSBBN.
