My room has some public wifi from some coffee shops nearby. How would I protect my identity if I'm using a Speedtouch 780as a repeater for the access point, then wiring that through Ethernet to my 360. I obviously don't want some joe smoe having any details about me.
You can't if it's non-encrypted. Also going through all what you said you would lag pretty bad I imagine.
Free public wifi, hes probably gonna lag pretty bad regardless of what he does. I use the free wifi from the coffee shop across the street from my work while im at work ( like right now:icon_bigg) and ive tried playing a couple of games here ( UT2k4, UT3, NHL 09 (wow the pc version of NHL sucks, but i digress from my point)) and it was pretty bad. I mean, i guess it was ALMOST playable, lol.
Good luck with that. Given you're on Xbox Live, though, who cares? You won't be getting any playable kind of ping in all likelihood, but for downloading a few demos or whatever from XBLA you shouldn't have any problems. The chances of someone being able to do anything with your public net traffic are inconsequentially slim.
I was just thinking the same thing, what kind of information are you (nitrousoxide) worried about people seeing?? As long as your not renewing your XBL account it shouldnt be sending any credit card numbers or anything, and i dont really think people can see your name or any personal info through the wifi connection to your 360, in fact, i think the only info they could see about you is anything you have entered into your XBL profile/bio.
