I've never had a v1 before. Just got one and went to replace the laser. I noticed I'm not having any success because the cog wheel apparently is designed to auto adjust.

If I go into diagnostic mode the wheel will start to move around and try to set itself I guess. It sometimes works.

Anyhow, how do you adjust these manually? Am I approaching the problem wrong? Just discovered this after installing a modchip on it. Guess I should of repaired the laser before modding it. lol

You can't adjust it manually. What is done to adjust it is put the system on service mode by shorting a test point with GND. Then a serial link with a Windows based PC (running sony's service software) is used to send service mode commands to the DVD drive on the PS2 via an RS232C link.

During the test the motherboard is configured to work with the laser and the settings (including the "optimal" tilt) for the laser are saved on the DVD drive EEPROM memory.

Basically the technician put an DVD test (the one made of glass) disc and click on the "auto tilt adjust WR" button on the tool. Then the unit will do the same thing you see when you turn "Diagnosis" on at the browser screen. But it will overwrite the eeprom with the new setting. With the browser screen setting the new adjust is not permanent.

It might be repairable, but I don't know if SCEI will want to repair it for you.
SCEA might repair it even thought it's quite ancient. If you were in Brazil I would repair it for you.
