I have an old V1 (gh-004) console always showing my game backups as dvd-video in the browser. The disc drive appears to sync to the dvd-r disc great. Locks on fast, just never boots and shows me the dvd player menu after "unable to read disc". Went into the browser and sure enough, the console thinks is a dvd video. Retail game discs work fine. I do believe on occasion it has successfully booted a Game Backup.

DMS4 SE Pro running ToxisOS 0.41

    Any suggestions?

When this happens, it usually means the problem is with the lens or the DVD/CD controller.

Since i don't have much knowledge on DMS4, i would suggest asking for help on http://psx-scene.com/

PS1 backup (cd) and PS2 cd backup both work. I'm basing PS2 cd off the fact that the firmware iso's are PS2 "backups". If this is not a good test I'll find a real PS2 backup game.

Guess that just leaves out PS2 dvd backup. PS2 retail works.

Regardless of chip, is there a different wire from a modchip that controls PS1 and PS2 backups seperately?

I don't want to pop your bubble but the laser is worn out enough to only be able to read silver discs. It means the laser is close to completely wear out.

CDs are read by the same lens but the laser emitter has a infra red diode it uses to read CD-ROMs. because it's used less often than the DVD laser it probably is in great shape.

Modchips won't do any good besides helping the console on wearing the laser faster. You will need to replace it's laser soon or just stick to CD discs.

Bubble popped. Sounds good. Just time to repair it.

V1 consoles are slightly annoying to fix without the proper software tools because of the auto tilt mechanism.

If after replacing the laser pickup you have trouble with the autotilt function destroying the parallax adjust, boot the console to the OSD (normal menu) then press triangle at with the option "Browser" highlighted. Then choose the "Unit" option, press triangle again. Turn the "Diagnosis" option on.

Go to the "Browser" screen and insert a known good (and preferably original) PS2 disc. Watch it auto adjust the parallax gear until the best position, take a picture with a digital camera and send to me along with a dump of the console EEPROM (I can tell you how to dump that if you get down to do this) and I'll program the new position of the auto tilt adjust for your new laser on the dump file.

Wow i didn't even realize you had to do anything like that with a V1. I'd definitely like to learn how to do that. When i get to this point I'll for sure contact you. Sounds fun.

Why are people still using V1 consoles? For that matter, why are people so interested in using TEST ps2's to run retail games? I don't understand it, aren't they plagued with bad lasers to begin with? (not that the later models were any better, but V7 with the HD7 laser has been good to me)

Is there anything special with the V1's or TEST's when using them to play stock standard retail games?

I like the V7. Seems to be before the V9-12 laser burn outs, and supports the HDD as the v13 and up don't.

My V7 quit talking to the disc drive, and one day I came across an old broken down V1 at a PlayNTrade. It was just dirty and that was it. So I cleaned it up. The old KHS-400B in it still works too for the most part.

I put a KHS-400C in it, and this is the start the fourm.

As for a V1 being plauged with problems, I'm not so sure other than the fact that they used KHS-400B lasers.

Is it true a KHS-400C is a perfectly fine replacement laser for a V1?

Don't run the 30001 unit with anything but a 400B laser. The 400C is not mechanically compatible with that model mechanism. It will damage the flat cable that connects the laser to the optical drive electronics board. Also the mechacon is not 100% compatible with lasers that have the new laser diode (yellow rim on the lenses). Chinese replacement lasers do not count because they're refurbished and the Chinese more than often put the lens they can find and don't follow SONY conventions and labels.

There's nothing wrong with the 400B laser and I happen to have a V1 unit which works perfectly to this day. What cause them to break are mostly physical shocks (drops, bumps, smashes, etc) which cause the lens assembly to bend and lose alignment.

The worn out laser diode syndrome affect more older units, units that have been heavily used as DVD player or that have seen too much pirated discs.

My point is that you will have trouble if you insist on using that 400C laser on it. Save it for repairing your V7 instead.
