So, some time ago (lots of time) I read up on ESR releated stuff and ended up on forum threads talking about V12 PS2s and them frying their lasers because of sony not doing things right and them needing some kind of fix to not blow up, especially when used with burned DVDs. Not long after that, I dumped my (then only) PS2s BIOS and it was identified as V12, and after the initial "ohgoditwilldie" I just lazy-ed out with "I used it so much already, it would be dead by now if it needed that fix". Its still working fine today, even with lots and lots and lots of play time with discs, so what is bugging me now, were those, that had a fried laser, just guys with bad luck? Or did I have a lot of luck to get a slim thats still running fine? Or maybe my info is completely obsolete and other things have been discovered?
Maybe your console is actually a "v13" set, which had its MECHACON problem partially fixed by Sony. Also, these consoles probably need modding to actually make the MECHACON more unstable, under normal use.
How can I tell what I have? My PS2 has zero labels on it but I did manage to get it taken apart. Motherboard is stamped with GH-072-42.
Google gave me this: http://www.mod-chip.com/guides/263/playstation-2-hardware-revisions/ @aab: We're talking about the SCPH-70000 series here, not SCPH-90000.
So I have a v18 based off of that website. Know of any potential issues with that particular version? Seems to be the last model produced.
