Yes, GSM is used in nearly all other countries, which is what ATT (iPhone). Verizon's iPhone will use CDMA, so it won't be compatible in all countries.

Verizon was the first carrier to up their etf on what they called "premium devices" after which AT&T followed suit:

    http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/19/verizon-whittles-350-etf-advanced-device-list-a-bit-fcc-pres/

Both are now $350 on smart phones. Verizon has lower rates for standard handsets.

    Or

    http://technolog.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2011/01/11/5814167-iphone-4-comparison-verizon-vs-att

From all I am reading and have witnessed first hand the data is interrupted when a call comes in whereas I can surf actively while on an AT&T call.

    So that is my point.

The USB tethering is great for emergencies or when I'm at a customer's site.

Honestly, I don't see a ton of people flocking over to Verizon. If Verizon did this two years ago, then I'm sure a lot have would. With less people on ATT network, however, this can improve current users' experience - ie. less dropped calls, etc.

Here in the midwest, nothing beats US Cellular service/price wise. Their problem was shitty phone selection, but they're starting to get better with a variety of Android phones.

My girlfriend on the other hand does have ATT with an iPhone 3GS and she gets dropped calls occasionally and her bill is around $25 more and she last less calling minutes than me.

As someone who's company forces him to use Verizon for his work phone, regardless of the limitations of the network, I'll happily swap out my Crapberry for an iPhone. I'm stuck with the carrier anyway :)
