I found these images online. It's a regular Japanese Super Famicom, but under the seemingly identical hood, it has separate styrofoam parts with cardboard slipcases that I have never seen before in my life.

At first I thought this might have been a very rare HK or Asian version, but the small boxes only have Japanese font on them saying "Console" and "Controller", respectively.

The styrofoam insert looks like a regular one, but cleanly cut in half.

Has anyone ever seen this box type before? Is it an early or a late one?

I wouldn't know for sure but I would think that it would be a release console since it would cost more to make two separate styrofoam pieces.

Wow! Very attractive packaging. Hot damn. . . I'd love to get my hands on that.

I would be thinking the same, but since this console is in fact VERY rare and if the whole launch batch would have been packaged like that, we would have certainly seen many more popping up. I cannot find a single picture or info on the internet on this variation. The pictures are taken from a Yahoo Auction that is listed at $4000 BIN, and the auction has already been posted on at least 2 Japanese blogs, both provide no info though.

Does anyone have pictures of the Super Famicom launch in Japan? I tried to search in Japanese, but nothing to be found. I have the "Histoire de Nintendo 1983-2003" book at home which has tons of exclusive pictures from Japan in the 80s/90s, hopefully there are some pictures in it - but I don't have access until 2 weeks from now.

I asked the seller for more information about when it was released, let's see what (or if) he replies.

That's awesome packaging, sadly shortlived though...
