For quality, use VGA cables where applicable; not a 3rd party box, especially not a Chinese-made 3rd party box. Most boxes upscan Svideo anyways so if you want something better than your TV, you'll need RGB/component -> VGA or an official VGA device.

The other official digital cable Gamecube makes is a vga cable that utilizes the same port as the component Gamecube cable.

I've never used VGA so I wouldn't know. I'd go for a PS2 Linux VGA cable, Nintendo VGA cable (I can't find any reference to an official one), Xbox VGA cable if available (if any are not, I'd go for an XRGB w/ component cables)

Edit: I still can't find a GC VGA cable, I know some GC/PS2/Xbox games support progressive component but not sure if any other consoles besides DC natively support VGA.

The only true VGA adpapters that aren't upscan conversterse are:

    Xbox: http://www.x2vga.com/

GCN: Any moded DV Cable will work, they are sold at http://www.goldenshop.com.hk/

PS2: The Blaze VGA adapter will work...not sure where it is sold.

The one thing that is unfortunate about most of these consoles is that the games have to support 480p to be palyed on the monitor. On the Xbox this isn't much of an issue since about the same % of games as the Dreamcast support 480p. On Gamecube things are little more scarce, but most of the good games will usually support 480p. I'm not so sure about the PS2 VGA adpater, but I do know that very few games support 480p.

A good site to check out for game compatibility is www.hdtvarcade.com

Aren't all those VGA converters upscan converters?? They all convert composite sync + RGB/component to VGA. And generally they do a pretty bad job I've heard.

Apparently the GC VGA adapter was released in Japan only. I'd go for that if it can be found.

you forgot these two true VGA adaptors for Xbox. :-D

    Ken's VGA adaptor
    X-VGA box

both plug straight into your Xbox and gives you VGA socket to connet the VGA monitor.

    cheers

I trust (professionally) home made adapters over 3rd party liksang crap anyday. Ken's VGA thing looks great since it's housed in a HD pack.

I used to have X-Digital prototype box with my US XBox and it worked well... I sold to a chap in Canada two years ago when I finally ironed out the YUV bug on my PDP...

Also Ken will be making latest revision in separate box much like X-Digital box... just make sure to order early as his TAT is like minimum 4 weeks...

    cheers

that's D-terminal which is common in Japan only I believe...
there is no official VGA cable for NTSC GC and only hacked version of that D-terminal cable from HK among others I'm afraid...

or you can hack that D-terminal cable and convert to VGA cable...

goodness great thing I didn't try and pick one up then. :smt045

  14. Steer clear from the PS2 Linux cable. For one, you're most likely not going to find it in the wild seperate from the entire kit, and for another, it doesn't just display VGA out on any game - they have to be specifically written to take advantage of the cable, and I believe the only thing that does that is the Linux kit itself. If any games do, they're not advertised as such. ShadowofBob mentioned the Blaze adaptor; it's a rather nice piece of kit, and last I knew LikSang sold it, but you could also try NCSX and jandaman.com.

Apparently theres a disc necessary to boot PS2 games into VGA. Lots of chinese boxes come with them.

And as for modifying a Dterminal cable for VGA, thats horrible. Component is weaker than RGB already, seperating sync then doubling it ick. Instead of using VGA on any of these consoles, get a cheapo EDTV/HD (or simply component SD) since all adapters do is component 480p 2 33.1khz.

Yep, that BLAZE boot disk, but its only compatable once again with certian games..when will we get a TRUE VGA/HD out on a console?? (and have all games supporting it!) soon I hope!

"Cheapo" and "HDTV" are mutually exclusive atleast where I live, and I would think in the rest of Europe too.

Whatever, it looks real nice. You haven't seen one yourself, have you?

I know what VGA looks like in games. I've played plenty of Naomi/Atomiswave and my friend plays Dreamcast in VGA, yes wow it's clear but it's not like the video platform to live by. Games are going to use HDMI before they're going to use SVGA etc... I don't need to own a VGA box to rag on them, I know that it's just augmented component, which my TV has. Also as I said before, most people who buy VGA boxes are really getting a weak picture without knowing it because the boxes deceptively use S. I believe if you owned a flat screen CRT TV you'd have similar results with component.

D Connectors are used in Japan for component (Y/Pb/Pr or whatever it is), not RGB. It can't just be re-wired to a VGA D-SUB connector.

Actually it can, and so can the Component cable(althought it requires you to run 2 new wires whereas the D-Terminal already has 3 extra wires that can be used).
