Hello I am finally changing my old video game setup from CRT+composite for a modern TV with Scart + Framemeister, and I would like to ask about Dreamcast VGA boxes. I am looking to get a Toro box, and I will have two option: - VGA - SCART + Framemeinster I read that VGA is better than SCART, but with Framemeinster, maybe should I consider use SCART? And I will get all my SCART cables from (https://www.retrogamingcables.co.uk/). Is it the best place?
480p is always going to better than 480i. So the VGA will be the best option with video quality in mind. But the XRGB does a great job deinterlacing so I don't think you will be disappointed with RGB either. You will get about 20ms of lag added with the XRGB though
Go for SCART, i use it too and looks amazing. Also "Euro Scart connector can output RGBS (CSYNC) (480i+480p for the XRGB)" (Toro), so as long as you use a RGB SCART cable, you will get 480P (VGA Mode) as well. I also tried a direct VGA to TV method and my TV wasn't able to scale the 480p signal very well. I would go for the Framemeister in any case.
The only real advantage to SCART is that there are a decent number of Dreamcast games (including seemingly all the Windows CE ones) that won't use VGA without some tricks, if at all. I'm pretty sure all games work with SCART, at least all the PAL ones.
^ This. The Framemeister will actually accept "VGA" (480P) over it's RGB connection in the form of RGBS. The Toro has an onboard sync combiner circuit. It's just taking the 480P RGBHV (standard VGA) signal from the Dreamcast and turning it into 480P RGBS for that Scart connector on the side. If you're so inclined you can actually install your own sync combiner circuit into an existing VGA box, which is what I did. As well as a toggle switch to select 15khz or 31khz RGBS mode. Parts from Mouser to do this were under $10. The toro has all these built in.
Depends on how many consoles you're planning to use with the Framemeister. The Framemeister's great (I own one) but it's an expensive addition and many consoles require modification (I.e, NES, SNES mini, N64, Turbografx) to enable RGB. The Toro's a fantastic piece of equipment, and if you're only looking at a few consoles, you might find ways around the purchase of a Framemeister. I can't yet comment on the OSSC (I'm in back order) but I hear the line doubling for the Dreamcast looks stellar. Again, the purchase needs to made based on your individual needs and current setup.
