Does such a thing even exist and if it does where can I get one? The problem I have is that my Mitsubishi TFT won't accept the signal that my new XRGB-2 Plus gives out. You're lucking if you get more than 2 seconds of still image. I checked with the Q&A section on the Micomsoft homepage and it states that some TFTs just can't accept the image because of the refresh rate they use.

So I can either buy a new TFT that will accept the image (at least 50'000 yen I'd say) or an old CRT (Too big and heavy really) or best of all a VGA to D-Terminal adaptor so that I can use this little magical box on my TV.

You're not having much luck are you? A half way decent VGA to Component convertor which will support 1080i and below is going to be around $80 to $150.

Weird. My arcade monitor is obviously a TFT, and my XRGB-2 works fine with it. However, your issue might be b/c yours is HD? I didn't know that TFT's used different refresh rates than CRTS... then again, I don't know much about either.

Any type of converter you find is most likely going to not massage the signal (or refresh rate in this case) and you're going to be stuck w/ the same problem. Sure it's not a sync issue? Have you tried other machines w/ a similar connection (your MD is a homebrew cable, right?). Have you tried your MD on your computer monitor via the XRGB2 w/ no problem?

It won't work direct to the monitor because my monitor won't refresh lower than 31htz. The Mega Drive outputs 15htz. I don't think my TFT is HD although it does have digital as well as standard analoge VGA inputs. I use the digital side for the PC while stuff like the Dreamcast via the VGA box goes through the analogue side without a problem. But then again the DC via a VGA box is running at 31htz.

The makers of the XRGB-2 say that some companies use a different refresh rates on their screens which will cause one of three problems. 1. you get no image at all. 2. You only get an image when it's a still screen such as a DVD menu or a game title screen is present. 3. You get an image but it's all distorted. I thought about the sync issue but none of the settings made a difference (0,1,2 or 3).

They do give a list of screens that work and don't so I may just have to buy one of them. By the way, gaijinPunch what is the maker and model number of your screen?

So far I've tried the following on the XRGB2 plus2 with different results.

Home made Mega Drive 1 RGB mod - scrambled looking picture
Mega Drive 1 with composite - Nothing but sound
Mega Drive 2 running through S-Video via a Micomsoft RGBMD box - Same as the home made MD1 RGB mod
Super famicom via S-Video - Same as the home made MD1 RGB mod

So it looks like the problem is the Mitsubishi TFT. It does state on the Micomsoft site that this brand will have problems. Shit:DOH:

It's as if I'm never meant to have RGB in Japan without spending more cash.

If you can tell me what monitor you're using gaijinPunch then I'll see about getting one of those and selling my Mitsubishi TFT. Shame really because it's a fantastic screen as well. Jet black when it should be and vivid as hell when you want it to be.

You're missing something here. XRGB2 will output 15khz or 31khz modes... one for low res CRTS, one for high res CRTs and TFTs. Generally, since it sounds like you don't have a 15khz display capable of RGB of any kind, you will want your XRGB2 to be in 31khz mode (if it doesn't start up in this mode, hold the button down and then turn it on). It will only take 15khz input via the 21-pin RGB connector on the front. You shouldn't have to use it w/ your DC VGA box, but of course can if you want. To my knowledge, if you start up in 15khz mode connected to an HDTV, you'll likely just get a blank screen... not a distorted one.

It's a Toshiba, out of a Windy 2 cab. Forgot the model number. Good luck funding one in casing. :)

Is your Mitsubishi TFT one of these 100hz vertical refresh jobs? I can't imagine that it would be as these are impossible to play action games on. You would have (or at least should have) chucked it long ago. I've actually seen some arcade displays like this. So fucking stupid. Anyways, why not post the model of your TV and some of the local geniuses can get involved.

How much of your new games do you play? How bad do you need HD? The easiest option for pure RGB would be a Sony Wega. They use AV Multi input. RGB Hospice used to make cables. They don't any more, but they pop up every few months on YJ for about 5000 yen. I think I have a converter somewhere around here you could borrow until one showed up, if you went that route. But in this instance, you lose your ability to play 480p and higher.

Other than that, I've used my XRGB2 on my Aquos flat screen. I know you're partial to a CRT, but you're already digitizing and filtering the majority of your game machines to play them on your Mitsubishi. At that point, I would personally rather save the space.

The XRGB-2 Plus only has 31khz and 41khz (or 40 something, can't remember now but it's XGA mode) It has no 15khz out on it. Or if it does then there sure isn't any LED for it. I can see all the XRGB menus on screen and the TFT says it's in
    31khz mode with a resolution of 640 x 480.

What I'll do is buy a SFC RGB cable or a MD / Neo Geo one from yahoo then try them through the 21 game in around the front of the XRGB.

    Thanks for the help mate!

Okay, you have an X-RGB2+... I have an X-RGB2. Yes, they are different, obviously. I never really knew exactly how until this point (remember when Assembler was asking for a non-plus and a non-3 in the FS forum?)

Hmmm... yeah, never heard that. Maybe they're referring to 16:9?

That is step 1. Step 2 is to look for an XRGB-2 (no plus). I would let you borrow mine to try, but I need it to play games. In all honesty you don't need the 15khz mode since you're not displaying on a 15khz monitor. I'm wondering if there's some other issue though w/ the plus and not w/ the regular one which is cocking up your setup.

Well, by very lucky chance I found a RGB cable for the Saturn and SFC in a dirty back street store today. Got home and tried the Saturn cable. WORKS!! The picture isn't rock solid in the way that there are some artefacts around some lines but over all it looks solid enough. I'll try the SFC tomorrow.

It turns out that I can run anything through the D1 or 21 pin sockets and get them to appear of the TFT but anything running through s-video or composite just won't show. No great loss though since all I need to do now is get a 21 pin RGB cable for the Mega Drive and I'll be sorted.

    Here it is in action

Congrats. I'll bet you a shiney 100 yen coin the problem is that your homemade MD cable has the sync wired wrong. I've had issues with this. If you read the other thread, there's apparently no set way to handle sync (sometimes it's separated, sometimes it's composite).

Sure you're not talking about the fake scanlines option?

Anyways, congrats! Now to find the cables. For the MD, apparently you'll want a Neo Geo original RGB cable. I've got one, but no MD to test it on. For PC-Engine, you'll need a modded one, but there's a buy that's been selling them quite affordably on the YJ for a while now. 20,000 yen tops for Duo-R or RX. The rest are easy.

You're probably 100% right. I'll just buy that Neo Geo RGB cable for it.

No mate. I'm from RGB land. I used nothing but RGB until I came to Japan and was frankly shocked at having to use s-video. These artefacts look like a bit of shimmering around straight lines on text for example. It could be just a shitty cable from the Saturn to the XRGB though. So today I'll give the SFC a test.

By the way, what scan lines setting do you use? I've found that for Saturn low resolution stuff the 2nd setting is best while high resolution stuff such as dead or alive seems to look better with the 3rd setting.

Actually, now that you mention it, RGB Hospice used to make a Saturn RGB cable. It had an attract line on the product page that said, "For those that don't want the noise that comes w/ the official Saturn RGB cable". So... I guess you're stuck w/ the noise unless you can find a homemade (or Hospice cable) on YJ. I have a Hospice one. :)

I really only play 2D games at the moment. Not b/c I don't like the 3D ones... but just b/c I've not busted the Saturn out in a while, and the stuff in my "to play" stack is all 2D platformers and shooters. I also usually have it hooked up to my arcade monitor, which handles 15khz natively, so there's no filtering. It's an ass whore to flip on it's side (or back) so in the case of me being lazy, I'll use the flat screen and the XRGB2.

Man, you're joking, right? Shit! Now it's time to search for an unofficial Saturn RGB cable. The UK ones never had this problem :crying: Thanks for the heads up. I'll try Hospice first to see if they still have any but if not it's back to Yahoo.

Doesn't your wife get pissed off having a monitor on the floor? Your place must be way smaller than mine since you live in Tokyo. My missus would go nuts if I did that. Still, we've just been told that we have the green light to buy the land we're looking at. So by December I may have my very own games room! Fucking yeah!

Our house will look something like this one (taken from around the corner to where we'll be building out new home)

The Neo Geo uses a 8 Pin Circular DIN plug and the Megadrive uses a 8 Pin offset DIN plug, which means the centre pin is in a different position for each, so if you get a Neo Geo RGB lead you will have to bend and force the plug in.

Anyway good that you got your unit running. Although the Scanlines look fairly nasty on a LCD screen.

I think it looks pretty nice, even with the scanlines. Hows the lag?

    Really? More Spanish I thought:nod:

Thanks for the info. As long as it's not too hard to get in. Wasn't there ever an official Mega Drive RGB cable? Maybe that Hospice place has one? In fact I'm sure I saw one there at one point.

Yeah, it does look nice. This pictures don't really do it much good. Looks nicer in real life. There are 4 settings as well. In the pictures shown the lines are set to 50%. They look stronger on the lower resolution stuff such as the Saturn's BIOS screen but not so in high resolution mode.

As for Lag I can't notice any so far. I'm very good at Saturn Dead or Alive so if there was a game to notice it on, that would be it. Later I'll try a platformer that need pixel perfect jumps. Maybe Astel since that looks lovely in RGB.

I agree. Maybe it's the monitor? No lag w/ the XRGB2, and I mainly play games where 1 frame off will fuck you.

Hospice is on a very long break...maybe forever. You might need to look into having one built.

I have my own room (it's actually the master bed room). I work at home, remember? So, I kind of need the space. On the flip side, the wife and kid are in the living room all day, and sleep there as well, so I don't get to enjoy my sofa or big TV. We'll likely move into a smaller place at some point, but I will move my office to a mansion, so I can do whatever I want without the distractions of a wife and kid.

Nope. The same people that made the XRGB2 make another device which will output RGB from the MD, but it's a bit pricey.

All MD's output RGB natively through the DIN8.

Man, that's a bummer. Looks like I'll have to build one (or get someone to build one) or find one on Yahoo.

Ah, right. Lucky you. However moving your office in to a mansion will be cool. I'd love that.

Yes, I know. I have both the XMD-2 and XMD-3. They do a good job but look complete turd on a HD TV. So bad in fact that running either the Mega Drive 1 or 2 through composite will give better results. Just a thought though, I wonder if it would work if I connected the XMD to the Mega Drive then took the RGB out through the 15pin connector and stuck that in to the "PC in" on the XRGB-2 Plus? I think I'll give that a try right now!
