I'd like to play PC Engine, SNES or NES on a PC monitor. A friend of mine has an XRGB2 from Micomsoft, which offers an excellent picture quality. Unfortunately the XRGB is expensive. I wonder if it's possible to use a PC for upscaling the image. USB video capture devices for the PC are cheap and a PC should be powerful enough to upscale the picture in realtime. Another advantage of those devices is the support of PAL and NTSC signals. Has anyone experience with such a setup? I'm interested in getting the Terratec Grabster AV350: http://www.terratec.net/en/products/Grabster_AV_350_MX_73733.html It has composite, s-video and even RGB Scart inputs. Is there any software available which can enhance the image quality in realtime?
You can try dscaler http://deinterlace.sourceforge.net/dscaler4.htm Look at the compatible cards list.
That Terratec looks the same as the Grassvalley ADVC mini: http://www.grassvalley.com/products/advcmini Funny that the Terratec is Windows only and the Grassvalley is Mac only Anyways, it's best you check videohelp.com or another site where people have experience with these capture devices. The other devices in the ADVC range have input lag, making gaming quite difficult. I own a ADVC 110 and recorded some gameplay with it, which was not easy because of the lag.
Might be worth asking at shmups, I seem to remember people there rigging up what you're talking about (dscaler and a high-quality realtime RGB capture card, basically).
yeah I'd check with shmups, particularly because those guys will be on top of problems such as input lag and probably know which card is gonna give you the quickest response time
My main problem is, that I do not have a Desktop PC anymore. I only have a Laptop. So I have to look out for a USB or PCMCIA solution. I cannot use high-end solutions like the Holo3DGraph II: http://yokotate.hazard-city.de/ Anyway this setup would be over my price limit.
