I'm looking to buy some capture hardware that's capable of recording video from older consoles as well as something that works for new stuff (HDMI).
What are people's recommendations as for capture cards or PVR kind of stuff?
    Looking to spend about $150

Ideally I'm looking for an external box with its own power source that can take both yellow-white-red AV as well as HDMI

I use a Korean made card called SKYHD Capture X HDMI by Sky Digital. I can capture via S-Video, Composite, Component and HDMI from 480i all the way up to 1080p at 60fps. It can also capture direct from your desktop screen! Here's a link but for the japanese site. Official site - http://www.skyok.co.jp/product.php?code=606

It's a fantastic card but did have some issues with early firmware which are now all sorted. It can even handle real 3D video capture and has a built in net TV manager.

Pass through? I'm not sure what you mean there. Do you mean how do I connect stuff to it?

You play the game through your PC capture software. You don't have the console connected to the TV while recording, it's not possible.

oh right. the card is really fast so I can play games in real time with no lag on my PC via the capture card. No need for fancy sets ups. Just connect the console to the capture card and hit record. The card is cheaper now than when I bought it. back then there wasn't much choice for a high quality full HD capture card but now that there's more choice they've dropped the price to about 11'000 yen (120 odd USD). It really is a fantastic card. Even takes full 6.1 digital audio and can encode in 6.1 too!

actually, that is possible and something people with slow cards or PCs have to do. You just need to split the signal. i had to do it that way myself about 6 years back.

I cannot bring myself to play my retro games on the computer monitor :p
I could use the video output of my tv to record but that is composite only :(
I will try to get a good splitter setup for my 10$ recording card :p

You don't need to. All my retro consoles go through my Framemeister so when I want to record stuff I just switch the HDMI cable on the Framemeister from the one going to the TV to the one going to the capture card. Very simple.
