I'm going to start work on Encoding the videos for my Retro Core show but need to know what is the best format? I want the show to have a hi-resolution look but with a small file size. The audio part is fine since I'll use TooLAME or LAME32 for MP3 encoding (Probably in mono to save on file size). I though of using MPEG4 like I normally do but to get good quality images you really need a bit rate of 2500kbps or higher which results in a large file size. THen there's DIVX but you have to pay for that otherwise you get a DIVX logo in the corner of the screen. Finally I thought about XVID but some people say that this has problems playing on some media players.

So what do you guys recommend? I will be using Virtua Dub for the editing.

well... when you mean HR you mean 1900x1024? or 640x480? how long are the episodes? if they are the same lenght as anime you can easily encode the episode to around 230mb with exelent quality @ 640x480 and lamemp3 128kbps stereo, 2400 seems a bit high... dont think more than 1100 is needed for 640x480 ans specially if it aint FLCL.... i can teach you how to do it step by step , but if you get msn or aol to guide you, or meet me on an irc channel.

for anime go for divx "that water logo can be removed if you go to codec settins in the instalation folder, you have to uncheck a box"
and for movies xvid. always do 2-passes, it will make smaller and better quality videos, but i recomend xvid for all your mpeg4 needs

xvid sounds about right, its amazing how much it can compress.

Xvid is the way to go mate. :smt023 No one should have any issues playing it once they've installed the proper codecs. If anyone's having issues just ask them to download the k-lite Mega Codec Pack, takes care of pretty much anything.

Or how about the ACE codec pack, it comes with the most obscure of codecs (and it's 50mb) :smt042

I used Xvid to encode the Digital dance Mix Saturn Video. I got 12 mintes of video at a pretty decent quality rate for only 40 Meg. I think X-Vid is the way to go.
