i came across a sega genesis rom for this game called "Iraq War 2003" durring the intro it shows some pictures of saddam, bush and tony blair as this text scrolls... "2003, The USA & the U.K. Army invaded Iraq pled Iraq made and hold cosmically BNC weapons. Under the cloak of cosmically air attack, the land forces of the united Army pushed forward to the Baghdad. The Tigris where gestated the venerable civilization, became the focus of both sides contest. Your duty is stops the united army and guard the Tigris." then on the last screen before the game starts it says "Guard the Iraq is your holy duty!" the game itself seems to be a modeled after beach-head and is pretty boring. awhile back i saw some pirated metal slug game with osama bin laden for the gameboy. and you dont have to look hard to find kill osama or saddam shockwave based games, and then theres americas army and stuff like that. i was just wondering how far back does videogames and propaganda go. what was the first video game created to be used as propaganda? Never mind Videogame propaganda (only idiots fall for such cheap crap anyway) where did you find this MD rom based on the Iraq War? Yakumo
Videogame propaganda is even lower than comic/cartoon one, but effective at some degree. Anyway, show some pics at least.
I'm not sure when it started but there are a ton of anti-Russian/cold war inspired storylines in games out there
well, Desert Strike's original name was Beirut Breakout. Don't know if Communist Mutants from Space can be considered propaganda...or Raid Over Moscow... Smewhere I've read that America's Army (2002) was made to make more people join USA army.
No shit.... The entire game was funded by the pentagon as PsyOps, and the new one will follow the same strategy. Its like "Superman VS Stalin" in the 50s: they're trying to get their ideas into popculture.
There's a run and gun game called Guevara, where you can play as Che Guevara or Fidel Castro. It's called Guerilla War outside of Japan and the characters were changed. I wonder why... Anyway, it's 1987 in the arcades, 1988 for home consoles/PCs.
I do recall the GBC game that was a Metal Slug Clone...I think it had 9/11 in the title. Propaganda video games are out there. One I've heard of is the "Left Behind" video game, based on the books of the same title. Basically it plays out a scenario where all the good christians are raptured away, and everybody else is left behind, and therefore fucked.
an old classic from way back when i used to go to school was "white power DOOM", im sure theres a rom somewhere out there still.. think of it as the foundation for postal :katamari: hardly an offical release tho..
sidenote: The Simpsons re-ecarnation of that story is so funny; Homer is afraid of the rapture and tries to convert and save the people.
Americas Army, and its forthcoming sequel you are saying is coming is in reality a virtual drafting office. And it starts with *texan accent* "come one inside and eat some pizza and play some computer" and then later on some of them can be inlisted. In Denmark it is about how much you can see the world and get some good comrades in the true sense, and your friends becomes very good friends. And in reality every draft agent around the world. Is a seller of death. And I am against both kinds of bullshit, but I would rather eat pizza and play computer games. And then say to the drafting agent afterwards. "Sorry mate, but I got discharged before I got in , but thanks for the pizza and the little playtime with your propaganda videogame ". And I saw a documentary about it some years ago. So I know people are offering "free pizza and playtime on the computer", and then later on the same guy will offer you a military contract. Scary stuff.
A lot of those games in the 90s, etc were solely based on pop culture news at that time. Desert Strike was loosely based on Beirut bombings but in no way were those funded or officially supported by the military. Nor did any of those games support some type of political movement. That GBA clone, that Counter Strike Source mod (funded by Iranian government), and America's Army are pure propaganda machines that I know of. There's also one game being developed in Syria (I believe) that is funded by government officials and the base of the game starts off where you play as a Palestinian child fighting against Israeli soldiers.
As stupid as it may sound I've meet several army recluits who actually thought Iraq was going to be like a game until they got shot in the leg... madhatter do you have any images of that CSS iranian mod?
Kuma War is pretty close to what you guys are talking about. It's a war simulator based somewhat on real-life events in or around Iraq. The first mission replicates the killing of Saddam's sons. It's not "propaganda" in the sense that it isn't state-funded, but it's certainly highly political. Blur mentioned a Christian video game, there's been tonnes of those. The most amusing ones were by Wisdom Tree, the only company (to my knowledge) in America to make pirate NES/SNES carts and not get sued by Nintendo. There's one which licensed the Doom or Wolfenstein engine, can't remember which now, called Noah's Ark 3D, for SNES. It needed an additional genuine cart as a pass-through, like an import adaptor would. Crazy days.
My favourite game of this type is "Hong Kong 97" on the Super Famicom which is about the handover of Hong Kong to China. I've only ever seen this as a ROM and had no idea until I read the wikipedia article on it, that it ever amy have existed in cartridge form. Does anyone actually own a copy? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hong_Kong_97
Well is the real thing, and honestly games will never gain the respect movies have if companies keep making only politically correct titles...
Ah Kuma War, what an incredible piece of trash. I wonder, do they still do online updated mission packs for that game anymore.
