I guess it was so the "Instore Display Unit" PS1 could be pre-programmed with specific button presses for different demo playback options without staff or customer interaction. I bought 4 IDU units a while back for spares etc.. as they were Sony refurbished SCPH-1002's and new spares are getting a bit thin on the ground. I kept the discs and v2.1 controller units as oddities really..
