If you live in London and like flying direct to Japan then you probably flew Virgin Atlantic as they were generally the cheapest, flights got there in at the morning so you had a decent day to play with and I generally got a decent service. However they have just recently announced that as of 1st Feb 2015 they are ceasing their London to Tokyo Narita route, this now cuts down the number of direct routes from London to 3 (BA, JAL and ANA) and it becomes more expensive to fly directly (as most of these charged on average 100 pounds more then VA). I'm sad as I have a load of reward points that I may not be able to use to get a return Upper Class (Virgins First Class) flight to Japan.
Between this and Assembler's sad message about the 50 cent increase in US post costs, I'll be crying myself to sleep tonight. Or not. Hope all is well anyway, seems like it's been an age!
British Airways are total ass. I used them to fly direct to the UK from Japan in 2010. Shit service on board. They didn't have my son's child meals. They didn't have his kids amusement pack. Staff were arse holes and the plane was too hot. Now, Singapore air are amazing. Not one single complaint about them. Fantastic in every possible situation.
damn, i only use VA for the LHR - NRT route and have a huge mileage account saved up....guess I'm going to have to take a free trip to the states with my miles now. Lufthansa have scrapped their two bag policy as well now meaning they are no longer viable for me either. Looks like I'll be going back to JAL....
I had an affection for the VS route simply because that's the one i used to come out here the first time on holiday and then to move here on. The service , however, has been on a downward trend for quite some time and around 2011 i just used my points and switched over to BA who i thought were much better. Then i flew with Singapore on business in the Dreamliner - fair enough, just to Singapore - but good god...
I've always flown to the Far East with Finnair via Helsinki, when going to Japan I've flown once to Narita and once to Kansai - they always seem to be the cheapest (at least whenever I've got round to booking) and they arrive in the morning. I've not yet been able to afford a direct Heathrow flight. The only BA flight I can ever recall taking was on a codeshare to Helsinki this summer and I can barely remember it already, so it must've been OK. Best I've flown with is Lufthansa, worst Alitalia, although they were only ever medium distance flights.
