I was just thinking - I own about 60 different games machines - not unusual in any way for members of this forum and I have a fair few games for them. It's been a while since I exclusively owned just 1 machine and therefore played every game that I owned for that machine. Now I have these 60 machines, and a good collection of games for them, but I've gone from being a gamer to a collector. I now have hundreds of games that I've never played just to make the collections more complete. I'm not talking about games I'm trying to keep mint - I've just never actually played them. Am I alone - or is this quite common for collectors who were previously hardcore gamers?
Its not common, common is to quit gaming and to sell off your stuff. Your development is rather usual for anybody who really loves gaming in a way beside the actual gameplay And of course, when you don't have as much time to play games as you had in the past, and you still want to obtain your hobby, becoming a collector is pretty much the only choice. Or just buy a cab + Ketsui, play it every day for 30 minutes over 5 years and you'll feel satisfied as well.
I can't quit gaming completely - it's in my blood. Guess I have a blast of a retirement - lots of catching up to do then!
I try to play most of the games I buy, but most of them don't get the attention they deserve. I'll end up playing a game for about twenty minutes to an hour and if I'm not hooked by then the chances are that it's gonna sit on a shelf for a long time. I can get my 'fix' from the several hundred other games I own (this is probably a comparitively small collection on this board), so I find that unless something really blows me away then it's likely to remain unplayed for a while. Sadly, this means the Wii is posing a new problem for me. Zelda and Wii Sports were great, but can I be bothered learning how to use the wiimote as a gun or steering wheel? Not so far.. :-(
I've been in the same position for quite some time now. Although my collections are not quite as broad as yours. Haven't really sat down to play a game since the DC died, yet my game purchases never really slowed down. I'd say that 80% of my games are unplayed.
60 consoles with games? no wonder youre feeling swamped, even if you were all about gaming, where the hell would you start!!? ive been there too and the key is trimming down, i bet you could weed out 30 of those consoles and half of the games for the ones you decide to keep without even thinking twice. go over it, keep the gems and the games you really like and sell the rest. its a natural step in collector evolution, first you collect one console, then all, then all the stuff for one console, then all for all, then everything complete, then you sell it all off in favour of trying to recapture your life, then you realise games are fun and start collecting with a real exclusive direction this time... its a classic..
Same here.. stopt real gaming a while ago.. now I catch myself just playing games for about 10 minutes.. checking the intros and playing a bit for the experiance but then they go back in the box (usually forever) and that was talking about the new generation games.. as for the old generation collectibles, it's just a nostalgic things.. i remember wonderfull times and dreaming of playing that one game or console.. but when I buy them nowadays and try playing them I wake up out of my dream and realize these were freakin' ugly games and like the new games they go directly to my collectors shelves for some non existant rainy day that will give me the actual time to play these things As for the consoles (to be honost I am more facinated by hardware then the games themselfs, it's a different issue.. I just want to have them.. just because I didn't have them in the past when I used to slobber all over magazines showing me rare video game systems from Japan and what not.. this just left me with some kind of trauma to buy them all now that I can !
I recognise that facination with gaming hardware, i have it myself too. All those discussions in the past with friends about what console has the best tech specs made me really obsessed with it. Ofcourse the hardware is useless without software, so i buy for every console at least a couple of games. To respond a little more ontopic: i can't imagine myself ever ever selling a piece of my collection, i'm just too much in love with those game machines :icon_bigg. Luckily i still like to play games, but because of limited time i only do that on current gen hardware.
I usually buy 1 original game with the console, just to check if it works upon arrival, the rest of the games that I want to play (but never have time for) I can download nowadays! (I just love those torrent collections of all released games ever for a console  ) but somehow like in the past this makes me spoiled and tends to ruine the experiance.. < remember those good old days of wildcards on your snes? thats probably the time I stopt playing seriously By the way.. talking about those old friends you were discussing specs with, we live in the same city maybe I was one of them hehe :icon_bigg (I used to hangout in just about every videogame store in ams back in the days..
I remember spending more than 50% of my time on copying games for the c64/amiga/snes. Looking back, it never gave me the satisfaction like i have from an original bought game. But still.. i really consider the copybox and modchip for consoles as relevant hardware, so they must be in my collection . I don't use cd/dvd-r anymore in my consoles because of the strain it has on the laser. I think there is only a small chance we know eachother irl? There are still about 800.000 ppl in a'dam! btw. i live in the south-east part.
I still ask myself if that is true, why should cd/dvd-r be different then the original games in a stressing the lens way? is this proven? And that whole Amsterdam thing, I lived in south east almost all my life, but what I ment was maybe you were one of those guys hanging around the game shops like me (800.000 people but only a few game shops back then)
Once I got a decent job I got into that mode of buying everything, and appreciating almost none of it. Not to it's full potential anyway. Since I've gotten older, I've been getting back to the roots of actually getting good at what you play... this basically excludes all RPGs & Strategy games. However, I feel much more fulfilled, and I have way less shit around my house. Although I still do have a lot. On that note, I generally try to buy only stuff I will play, and only keep it if I will replay it or it holds a very special place in my heart. I move house all the time too, so that has a big factor.
but if you use the standard color without changing it would be fine only if he changed it from hand or not ? sorry for beeing offtopic
I have several hundred games I haven't played. It's just not possible with time constraints. Mind you I plan to catch up, but yes, large scale collectors do have large scale "virgin collections"
80%!? Ouch. I mean, its easy to believe in a collecting point of view, but.... wow. As for me, I definately play ever game I buy (Being only 15 makes that alot easier  ) but I have noticed a certain pattern. On most new games I buy I only play for around 5 days, then slowly quit. It really makes me sad though. So many games coming out for so many different systems and me being a game lover and all.... I just buy them all, and dont even have the patience to finish one. I need to sit down with my Zelda, my Super Paper Mario, and some others. Infact, I havent even beaten Resident Evil 4, and I have had it since release! :crying:
I don't collect like others do. I find systems I like, find the games I like for those systems (usually discovered via emualtion) and once I own al lof those games, I consider my collection complete. I don't have the patience nor cash for this "Gotta Catch 'Em All!" nonsense, but I have respect for those that do.
LOL, the title conjures up all sorts of odd images! :lol Actually, my record collection used to have quite a lot on the Virgin label, and I used to deal with a dealer who specialized in Virgin. I have loads of different systems, mostly because I want to be able to play anything, I guess. Sometimes I'll buy up collections or what have you, but usually now I just concentrate on my Saturn for the dedicated must have all games side of collecting. I have thought about doing other systems, but there are lots of constraints that prohibit that at the moment, at least. As for the other systems, I mostly buy games I'll play. For example, I mostly play 360, and have a fair few games for that. I buy games I know I'll like, so I very rarely sell them on. At the same time, I'll pick up games (particularly for PS2 / gamecube) that I know I'll enjoy, but don't get round to playing them for a while, e.g. RPGs. Then there are the games I'll pick up just because I know they're rare and/or it is a good price! Even when I buy a game because I know I'll play it, I seldom get the chance to. I concentrate mostly on my 360, so my PS2 and other formats don't get so much of a look-in. Sadly, I'll even buy a new game I want on 360 instead of just playing one of the many I haven't on another format :-(
