Super Street Fighter IV, Marvel Vs Capcom 3, BlazBlue, Mortal Kombat 9...all of them are great and enjoyable fightings...But! I have fed up playing them again and again and again and again with my friends (I have already stopped playing SSFIV since I have been playing SF from SFII while most of my friends have become more fanatical with the SFIV) while there are so many other great fighting games as well. Sure, we also play fightings like Melty Blood Actress Again somethimes but the main courses are the latest popular fightings everyone likes to spam about (expecially the tourneyfags which I hate so much since they ruin the pure fun of the genre). What about Dead or Alive? My friends hate it for poor excuses like they think that it's all about spamming the same moves again and again (yeah right, like they don't do the same for the games I mentioned but whatever) and it deserves only for the female casting. And since they hate DOA they hate Virtua Fighter series as well which was the inspiration for DOA series.

So recently I said to myself "Screw you, guys! I'll play it myself!". And I did the right thing: it has been a long time since I last played VF like crazy (from VF II for PC to be more exact) and now I'm enjoying it more like the foresaid games that they're all about flashy/cheap/broken/difficult to be performed moves with unrensponsive controls, laughable bugs, spamming is the way for winning, you have to pay extra money for new characters and costumes (the fact that most of the new characters from BlazBlue Continuum Shift are available only via paying extra money for downloading them is outrageous), they sell mainly for the cool characters/story/design/setting and so on. And on top of that? They're popular on the fighing tournaments, so the players have a bigger motive for keep playing them since they can copy/take lessons from proffessional gamers' battlestyle in order to win when they're playing with their friends. On the other hand, VF is 100% realistic, the moves are easy to be perfomed, the AI is smart but not unfairly cheap so you can't win by spamming the same moves again and again but with strategy and without have to be a fighting games freak, it doesn't gives a shit about story and characters, it's more balanced than most fightings games...And on top of that? It's the godfather of 3D fightings that make other companies follow its example like the super-duper overrated Tekken (which I used to enjoy till the 3rd one but not as much as VF which I first played) and DOA (which is much like VF but with hot chicks and 3D interactive stages).

Back at the Playstation-Saturn era, VF was very popular mainly because the gamers were amased by its georgeous graphics and great realism that made all 2D fightings look like bad joke but later when the competition got bigger they stopped to care about it because its generic story and characters looked so boring for them and it was so realistic that it was boring and that's why they prefered the I-try-so-much-to-show-so-cool and flashy Tekken. Personally I love the realism of VF because Yu Suzuki (the creator of the game that he's rensponsible for many other all time classic hits like OutRun and Shenmue) knows how to make realistic games looks so cool and enjoyable (just like many other arcade games from Sega from other creators like Sega Rally and Virtua Tennis). Another fact that made VF less popular was that the first three ones were released for Saturn and Dreamcast while most gamers were owning Playstation.

My conclusion? I hate the fact that even thought VF is the godfather of 3D fightings you won't see talking about it on the internet and taking part on fighting tournaments. They prefer playing other fightings even if they keep bitching about their bugs, how unbalanced they are, how their updates ruin the battle style of their favourite characters and so on. In few words? Even thought they can play a flawless fighting like VF they love being masochists. I know that the thread is about appreciate VF but in the biggest part I'm whinning about how uncared-for from the gamers is and comparing it with other fightings so I apologise for being such a nigger...uuuuuuum, I mean nagger (South Park reference intented :p ).

    Virtua Fighter FTW!

    This.

Also, dude... use the enter key every once in a while. Huge paragraphs are not easy or fun to read.

    However,

I am all for a real VF appreciation thread as long as it is not all about bashing other fighters. Virtua Fighter 2 for the Saturn is definitely one of my favorite fighting games.

I used to play the original VF in an arcade nearby, and that was pretty awesome too. None of the ports are as good as the original, though the 32X one is decent.

The arcade version of VF3 was also awesome. I never really played it enough to get a good feel for what it was like, but I was really impressed by the brief glimpse I got of it. I love that one stage where you're on the little sand trap on the beach.

And so on. I hope I am not the only person who responds to this.

I was never the biggest VF fan, but it's probably my favorite 3D fighting series next to Soul Calibur. Then again, Tekken was always kinda crap and there's really only one reason to play DoA. I just find VF sort of boring compared to games like SF, KoF or the Vs series, mainly because of the "realism" (VF is far from realistic, anyway), but at least out of all the 3D fighting series, it rewards button mashing the least.

VF1 = meh, even the arcade version has aged very badly.
VF2 = great, the Saturn version is probably the greatest arcade port on the system.
VF3 = never played the arcade, but 3tb on DC isn't very good, and there's really no reason to play it these days.
    VF4 (Evolution, whatever) = great
VF5 = pretty much the same as VF4 with better graphics.

Hm, let's see:. Long, rambling writing structure? Check. Speaking in almost messianic terms about Virtua Fighter? Double check.

Tell me, Vetus... ARE YOU MY LONG-LOST TWIN BROTHER?!

At least you use paragraphs. Sorta.

Anyway, I liked the original Model 1 Virtua Fighter. Graphically, it's obviously not as complex as even VF2, but it still has a certain shinyness to it. I also like the way it plays. Come to think of it, even the 32X version is pretty cool.

When VF3 first came to Athens I spent a ton of money on it. Too bad the DC port was half-assed, here's to hoping they eventually emulate it on some future console.

I was actually able to get VF3 running in Supermodel the other day, and it's somewhat playable. There are some pretty bad artifacts - like rings that are all over the character's bodies. But I wouldn't be surprised if they're able to properly emulate it in a couple years.

Just as the last version of Supermodel near-perfectly ran SCUD Race, I believe the plan now is for every new update to include support for another game in similarly high quality, with Virtua Fighter 3 the next target, followed by Sega Rally 2. By focusing on each title separately, it (should) make compatibility with the complete Model 3 set all that easier. From what I've seen of emulation efforts in the past, my guess is that Harley Davidson & LA Riders and Emergency Call Ambulance will take the longest to accurately reproduce...

I don't care about those. Just VF3, Scud Racer and Sega Rally 2:p

Scud Race looks pretty good on my computer pretty much throughout the intro section, but once I actually start the game it slows down to like 1/2 speed. My computer is pretty fast, so I don't see why it should be doing that. Any idea what could be the cause?

It would also be nice if they could get the sound working, and controllers as well. You can use Joy2Key of course, but then you don't have full analog control.

This sounds like a common problem in most games with real time intro sequences, because during those you're only watching pre-scripted motion and camera movements. As soon as you include variables such as player control and artificial intelligence, the amount being processed increases massively so the frame rate often takes a hit. Of course, you won't notice this happening on actual hardware (well, in this case, at least!) because the programmers optimised everything to run at a consistent speed throughout... does this make any sense, or am I way off the mark in my theory?

It makes sense, but it seems like my computer is fast enough that it should be able to overcome that.

Yeah, on my old shit box of a PC I could watch the real time intro to Sega Touring Cars just fine but when the game started it would run at 10fps!

I really, really hate this stereotype about DOA, especially when every other fighter has female characters just as well-endowed if not more-so. Furthermore, you come into a thread about appreciating one series without the bullshit just to knock another with bullshit. Good job.
