Been looking at this game (I also bought it for about 100 notes). Its been billed as being one of the rarest games. Is it really? It seems to crop up fairly often now or is it just one of those times where some chump paid silly money and now everyone expects it to fetch a high price?

I think its one of those games that is semi-rare. It doesn't crop up much on yahoo but I hear it can be found in Akihabara pretty easily. Its one of the Acclaim '8' I guess which are all pretty htf and pricey. I'd say based on personal experience (I only need 2 jpmd games for the lot) that the rarity would go something like (from least rare to most rare)

    True Lies, Judge Dread

    Justice League, Batman Forever

    Virtual Bart

    Maximum Carnage

    Foreman for Real

    WWF Raw

In japan, yahoo etc expect to pay 40-60k from JL down, 12-25k for TL and JD. They can all be found though. Yahoo usually has most up with high starting prices that never sell..except MC and RAW which always sell fast on yahoo.

The thing is though that the pricier jpmd games are generally cheaper outside of japan these days. I've seen some nice tengen games fetch peanuts on ebay, Gauntlet etc. Saw a mint JP General Chaos for £10..wtf? Same is true of the acclaim stuff too, plus sometimes people just don't know what they have. I've know of a couple of people who picked up VB for £5.

It's not actually that easy to find in akihabara.
Though they got one in nearly most of the shops, they sell it at an insane price (like 80 000 yens) just like all the other ultra hard to find stuff so they keep it for people to see it and dream lol
I'm pretty sure it ain't like all the other expensive but common shiets (like contra, dracula and so on) where they have 20 copies of each in each shops.
This one, they know that if they sell it, they won't have another copy to show.

Is the software different in the Japanese release? If not then I really don't see the reason to pay over the odds.

I personally love Virtual Bart, but a Japanese language version seems like a lousy candidate for being dreamed over. AFAIK it's only rare due to the fact the Simpsons weren't that popular over in Japan at the time. Like the early Playstation Dragon Ball Z game that did get released here in the US. It used to fetch stupidly high prices back when DBZ took off despite being a rather poor fighter.

surely it is a pretty rare title in japan and therefore only interessting as a collector item and it isn't the money worth for only play it.

and as cyber said, you can find it easily in akiba (to have a look at it), but you only will find the same copies which are in the vitrins for years now
