So I FINALLY got the PS2 Version of Virtual on and I'm quite impressed. I loves it.

BUT......I also kinda don't really know what I'm doing.

Seriously, I know the game is pretty fast (specially OT) but is not like you cant see whats going on...

That and Marz is pretty much the worst of the series, it screams "rushed job" no matter where you look at it.

If you want to play the real Virtual On, get a Saturn (amazing control) since while OT on the DC is pretty good (specially the graphics) the lack of buttons on the pad make most complex maneuvers kinda difficult to get done the right way.

I have played the Saturn version more than 100 times from start to finish on hard mode:rambo::nod:

    Those were the days...

I think he means control wise ( how you move and aim to shoot).

Basic beginner's strategy for Virtual On is to jump a lot. When you move the left stick to the left and the right stick to the right, you'll cause your Z-axis rockets to fire and your virutaloid will leap into the air. This will have the added benefit of making you automatically face your opponent, at which point you can target him.

Jumping into the air might put you at a disadvantage against an advanced player, because then you're not behind any cover. But you should learn how to use your weapons first; once you have that figured out, then you can tackle the more advanced methods of moving with your enemy.

Jumping just slows you down, is better to dash, then move to the side your HUD tells you, so then it auto-aims the other virtuaroid without loosing any speed.

I recommend doing lots of combos with light-weight virtualroids like Viper II or Fei-Yen. Viper has a kinda weak armor and medium weapons but is extremely fast and when doing combos (like the dash and homing missiles, or main weapon when jumping+down) it packs some serious punch. Fei-Yen will overdrive when it gets to only 50% HP, which makes all her weapons three times more powerful, but at this point a big impact would kill you for sure.

If you arent good at high speeds I'll recommend going with Raiden since he's has some kickass weapons (like the laser and bazooka) and isnt as slow as Dorkas. Belgdor is kinda fast and has a good armor, but only one good weapon (napalm) with granade and missiles being kinda lame with piss-poor accuracy.

In OT Temjin and Belgdor (Grys-Vok) have some wicked upgrades making them a good choice for most types of combat.

Oh I thought you were playing that one, my bad...

Is hard to explain whats wrong if you havent played the first 2 games. To start it uses the Force gameplay which not many fans like (myself included) and it has this weird story mode with the worst script ever and overall almost completely different from the rest of the series.

I say stick with the first, OT is good but you'll need a DC and the controls arent nowhere as good as the Saturn version (no idea with the DS2 on the PS2, but since it has more buttons I guess it plays more like in a Saturn).

If you want the full experience, you need to lift a pair of Twin Sticks. The shipping makes them prohibitively expensive though (for what they actually cost).

Temjin is who I've been using. I can only get up to Oh that one you fight in the forest (for get it's name) before it utterly destroys me.

Yeah the Dual Shock Emulates the Twin Sticks quite well.

    Green hill with Belgdor right?

Well, use either Rayden or Viper II. Temjin sucks ass in the first Virtual-ON, with the only good weapon been the primary one (sword shot) and its main attack combo having almost no accuracy and a low response time.

IMO the Saturn pad owns the twin sticks, dunno if theres a similar mode in the AGES port...

I tried playing this in the arcade, but ended up getting frustrated and leaving before I was out of lives, lol.

Look through the Virtual On thread in shmups (Off Topic). There's a post w/ a link to a Temjin 1CC video + the secret boss. That might help.

Hmm... a stock controller (even a good one) versus something made specifically for the game? I know what I'd go with if I liked the game that much.

He has a point though. The Saturn pad for Virtual On is VERY GOOD! The DC pad on the other hand isn't.

Look, I've played the arcade OK? the twin stick is yet another way to make a game look cooler, but under serious gaming that controller is just a way to make the game unnecessarily complex, mostly becos you've to learn all these joystick combinations to make a movement that you could easily do with just pressing a button on the Saturn pad.

For example, to jump you have to move the joysticks outwards, while in the saturn pad you just press X or Y. To rotate you have to move one joystick foward and the other backwards, while in the Saturn pad I just press L or R.

With the twin sticks is almost impossible to move, dash and rotate at the same time, while with a Saturn pad that move is a piece of cake...

The DC pad only needed an extra couple of buttons, thats what the great advantage of the Saturn pad.

I think the Saturn pad was the single best controller ever. Digital control peaked when that was released.

Let's see if anyone in the future can make a comparable controller using analog or motion controls...

For the dreamcast ALL sega had to do was tack a 2nd analog stick to the Saturn 3d pad.

Anyways I beat Virutal on with Raiden. Took awhile but I did it.

I've been in debate with somebody as to what Genre Virutal on belongs in.
This one guy Swears Virutal On belongs in the Fighter Catagory since it's 1 on 1. I say it's more of a Mech Combat Sim due to it's complicated controls
and having played it I definatly say it falls under Mech Combat sim than regular ass fighter.

    I can tell you when I bring those thru the custom all those years ago it did raise few eye brows among custom officers... -__-;;
Last I counted I have 3 Saturn and 2 DC ones - beats me why I have so many - and it seems most of them are now disappeared - to my mate's house no doubt~ -___-+)

Yeah, but I think they were trying to keep the DC as different as possible from the Saturn, reason why they went for a PSX-esque industrial design on the unit (it looks a lot like a PSX-PSone, plus is white)

And the DC's controller looks like a combination of a N64 and a PSX one, althought it has the Saturn 3Dcontroller's analog thumb pad and triggers:nod:
