I am using vista 64bit as my main OS but have a slighly older logitech webcam that won't work on vista so i decided to use a virtual machine with xp on it. I have a saved HDD image for virtual pc 2007 but that doesn't do USB so i setup a xp system on virtualbox but somehow i can't figure out if/how i can get it to use the network device from the host machine as i had in virtual PC 2007 and if not how i get the shared folders to work in order to get driver files for my network device and other files as i shared 1 folder from my desktop but i can't seem to work out how to see it. Anyone know more about virtualbox who can help get shared folder working and be able to tell if it will allow me to use the host network device directly or not.
First of all, if you didn't install Virtualbox Guest Additions on the guest machine do it (pressing host key + D in the virtual XP installation should mount and autorun the Guest Additions disc image). Then follow these steps: 1. Right-click in the button I highlighted in the following picture, this will open the folder sharing menu. 2. Press the Add New Sharing Folder button (highlighted in the picture): 3. Fill the fields with the required information and check the "make permanent" option. And the last step, from the virtual machine enter the command prompt and type the following: Replace foldername with the name you gave to the shared folder in step 3. This should make an X: drive in the virtual machine, which will be the shared folder between both machines. Hope this can help you, if you have any questions LMK
Thanks very much just done the command prompt section as i've done all the others already and it worked so now can get any files i need. Another quick question, How would i go about getting my usb wifi adapter set up for internet and webcam set up both from my host machine into the virtual one as i can't seem to work it out. *Edit* I must be blind as straight after i made this post i noticed the option in networking and have my WIFI adapter working.
I never tried to install a webcam on Virtualbox, but clicking on the USB button in the lower right part of the screen will make appear a menu with all the USB devices connected to the host computer, selecting the webcam between these should make it detectable by the guest machine so you can install and use it.
I tried what you suggested but it doesn't seem to work, i selected it but it doesn't do anything and if i try again it throws me an error.
Well, that probably means your webcam isn't supported yet, Virtualbox's USB compatibility is a bit poor yet. You should check their forums anyway, maybe you can find there a way to put it to work...
Thanks for your help, i guess i just need to skip using the webcam for now as it not that important and eventually get a newer and better one sometime soon which will support most OS's including vista and XP.
Oh well, i guess i'll have to buy a newer webcam that will work in vista. i really didn't want to mess around with my HDD and its current partition(s) just to install XP which is why i though of Virtual PC untill i remembered it didn't support USB then i thought of Virtualbox.
get yourself a PSeye (intended for the PS3) and download some custom drivers - or better yet, look for drivers first. That thing's quality is amazing and the price is really a bargain for what you're getting compared to other PC webcams-proper.
Cheers for that advice Barc0de Found the drivers for the PSeye within under a minuite and it seems as easy to set-up as any other webcam which is good. For about £20 to £25 (on amazon) it does seem like a nice price and if it is as good as a proper PC webcam then i don't think i can go wrong.
oh believe you me, it's WAY better. Sony don't fuck around with peripherals for their beloved PlayStation 3! PS: it also sports a high-quality built-in microphone, which works just as you'd expect.
Only webcams i've been looking at so far were a Microsoft LifeCam VX6000 and Logitech QuickCam Fusion but i may just go for a PSeye instead.
I ve got many webcams at home. A logitech one, someone gave me An XBOX 360 Live camera, my parents use for talking to other relatives. A PSeye I usually have hooked up to my PS3 but my mum asks for it every single time because "it's so much better".
Cheers for the info/suggestion of the PSeye. £18 + free shipping sounds like the best price i can find online and in stock (from CEX). I could have it for £11 from CEX as i have a £7 credit voucher/recipt but out of 34 there is none in my local store and i can't be bothered messing about ordering online and having to then send them my credit voucher/recipt.
Don't overlook that X360 Vision camera. It works perfectly under Windows XP/Vista (and presumably 7) with Microsoft drivers. It works under Ubuntu with open source drivers. It doesn't have a built-in mic like the PS3 camera, but it is 640x480 native and works a treat for video. It's also super cheap if you buy it bundled with a game. Microsoft has recently been dumping stock of "You're in the Movies" (shit game, but comes bundled with a camera) and retailers have been selling it from £5-10 depending on location. In the US Best Buy was even selling it for free with coupon a few months back. Buy the game for the camera, use the case as a replacement case for a broken disc and use the game disc as a drink coaster. -hl718
Cheers for that, never though of the looking at the vision camera. Managed to find that it for £10 inc free shipping on its own. I guess its now upto whether i go for the cheaper and easier to use Vision on PC camera but sacrafice the mic or go for the PSEye, they both seem pretty good so its down to choice.
Having both cameras I can safely say that the Live vision camera is vastly inferior (image quality-wise) to the PSeye - as well as older in technology. It's a decent camera nonetheless, but not as good as Sony's offering.
