I am about to graduate from college and so my parents are treating me a trip to Osaka for video game shopping. I have never been there before. Can someone please tell me a list of places that I must visit for new and retro games?

    Thanks alot!

Sorry to say, but why Osaka? I've only been there one afternoon, so I don't really know the place, but I do know there are lots of interesting things to see outside of Osaka :)

    Why not! ^__^
I go to Osaka every time I visit Seoul.

You need to go to Den Den Town where you can find what you are looking for.
Also near by there's rather long stretch of shopping streets for few km long... he he

I think the one near Den Den Town is Ebibashi(?) and you can find some nice restaurants there as well... Also you may want to drop by Universal Studio...

And there's Rinku(?) Discount Complex near Kansai Airport where you will find some non-video game related bargains...(tip: drop the bags into the airport locker and catch the limousine from there. After shopping return to the airport and catch another limousine to Osaka City.)

Yeah want to go to Den Den Town which is in Nipponbashi. There's a subway and train stop there so it should be easy to get to once you find it on a map.

You can also hit the riverwalk area....Donbori is it called? Anyway, after the sun goes down it lights up well and there are tons of places to eat and things to look at.

I am actually in Osaka right now and I visited Den Den Town today. To my disappointment, I was quite lost and could not find many good video game stores.

The only stores I visited were Big Tiger, Softmap and Super Potato #7. I am not even sure if that's the main super potato store.

Could someone please give me some names of stores that are in Den Den Town that I should visit? Thanks!

From my experience in Tokyo, the best stores are actually to be found in residential/shopping areas OUTSIDE of the "gaming mecca" district. Rent a bicycle, get lost (literally) and find some amazing deals!

RichieCStar==>In Denden you've also 2 bookoff,an other Big Tiger and an other Sofmap. You have to go to the streets paralleles to the main Denden avenue(or maybe you've seen them and missed the main avenue).

There are 2 main place in Osaka:

1)Umeda,north center, which is the business sector and with a lot of great shops like the Yodobashi Umeda.

2)Namba,south center, the leisure sector, with Dendentown,Shinsaibachi,Ebisubashi,Sennichimae...etc...Great places here are Dotonbori and Americamura. In Dotonbori some nice restaurants are the Kushi-ya and an isakaya in the building near the one with the big crab(at the enter of Dotonbori). There's also the famous Kuiadore building where you can eat a delicious shabu-shabu.Americamura is for young people, lot of crazy places here,club...etc...,it's at the end of Dotonbori.

And it's only a sample, there are a lot of other places to go since you're also near Kyoto,Kobe,Himeji,Nara...etc...There's also the Capcom building.

AntiPasta==>It's only if you want "common" things, because most of the really rare stuff is in the "gaming mecca" district. And for what I've seen of the retrogame shop in suburbs or countryside it's sometimes a bit disappointing. But well there are always some shops in which you can make great deals in the suburbs of Tokyo/Osaka ;)

i would not recommend such acts since he already got lost in the mecca itself. and it's not true that the best stores are to be found in the pampa of japan. they may be much cheaper but also the assortment is not comparable with stores like super potato, retro friends etc.

if you resident in japan and have a lot of time every weekend to spot out some hard offs etc. then you have some good opportunites to find some nice stuff for cheaper.

Exactly...And even if they're way bigger than the little shops in Denden or Akiba(it's logic because there's more place in suburbs or countryside,so sometimes they're like a warehouse),in fact they can only be cheaper on common things and I'm not sure there is more choice(you can see 20 times the same game). And they're often much more expensive for the few "rare" things that they have.Obviously you can always make a lucky find.

Well, then, I guess I just had a lot of lucky finds :)

True, if you want really rare stuff like the gold-plated Rockman cart, Psychic Assassin Taromarou or the likes, you'd want to go to Akihabara, but the stuff I found outside of Akihabara was rare enough for me, and I assumed the same for him.
