    So it wouldn't work.

Maybe somehow you implant OEM info into BIOS. But im not sure if its legal or not if you're using a genuine legal key

I think the key is worthless if you want it to be legal. As far as i remember (someone correct me) it rests with the sticker the keys printed on. However if its a OEM i cant remember (and it may vary around the world) if you need to peel the sticker off and then use it on another machine or it might be the case that your not allowed to use that key with any other machine.

Either way im sure someone will correct me and also there is a sticky marketplace thread for freebies next time your feeling generous.

OEM keys cannot be transferred without the original hardware. Non-OEM keys can, as long as the original installation is removed. Volume license keys (which could be what these are if it was a high number of machines) can only be transferred to other computers owned by the licensee (e.g. only school owned). Academic licenses (which these could be also) can only be transferred to other students/school personnel.

My opinion: the admin gave you an illegal copy of a key which isn't currently being used by the school.

An OEM sticker can be placed anywhere. Regardless, this still sounds fishy to me. Then again, I get have enough copies of Windows sitting around.

    What you're describing is piracy.

Using that key on a copy of Vista other than the computer it came attached to is no different than downloading a copy of Vista from a warez site and installing it that way.

Are you in middle school? Wow, lol.

    Either the key is:

    A) OEM.
    B) Volume Licensicing.

Both of which are the same. Guess what, the Vista Business key on those stickers are used to validate the XP license. So, it's already active and the key is useless.

Nope. the school has a VLK for XP and the admin told me that the MS activation server will forget the Systems info thus allowing the Key to be activated. im not sure when this period expires so its up to the receiver to try it to see if it works. and i would appreciate not being called dummy

Sorry, I'll retract that. I got out of hand there, but still, VLKs are limited just as OEMs and are tied to the school.
