Does anyone else use voice recognition with XP? I've just started playing around with it and it's really surprising me. Mostly I wanted it for voice commands which it will do with Office 2003 pretty well, but the dictation function is also been working a lot better than I thought. In Outlook I can tell it to open a received email, tell it to scroll down, tell it to delete, then go to the next email. For my junk email I can say, "Select All, Mark As Read, Delete" and it does it. You can access any command on the menu bar as well as just say some commands without accessing a toolbar.
Oh, and it's supposed to work with IE, but I'm using IE7 Beta 3 and it's not registering...maybe that will work soon. Surfing with voice commands would be cool, especially with the scroll down function.
What do I need to start voice recognition on office 2003? I ve got Law courseworks comming up, and I could sure use the function to write some 3.000 words per project
It's already built into Office 2003. Go to TOOLS then select SPEECH. It will take you through the setup where you'll adjust your Mic and do a test with you reading text. There are about 8 samples texts in all and Microsoft claims that the recognition gets better with each one you do. You can turn the microphone on and off through the language bar. I already was using the language bar since I sometimes need Japanese so I already had it positioned on my desktop but I'm assuming the set-up process will add it there if you haven't already. You can choose Voice Commands or Dictation. The Voice Commands worked 100% of the time (ie OPEN, FILE, SAVE, EXIT). The Dictation was good but I spoke pretty clearly. You switch back and forth between the two on the language bar depending on how you want the software to accept the speech. So far I've only got it working with Office, but it's nice. I was working on an Excel spreadsheet on one minitor and my eBay auction listing software on the other (Turbo Lister). I had to select Excel with the mouse to make it the primary window, but after that I could say "copy" then hit Control-V to paste the text from the cell into Turbo Lister. Once I was done editing in Turbo Lister I selected Excel again and said "Delete" and it deleted the box it had just copied. I said "Enter" and it went down to the next line, then I said "Copy" and it copied it again and back I went to the auction software. Every now and then I said "Save" which is a command it will do without needing to reference the menu bar, ie you don't have to first open the FILE menu. I was doing dictation in Outlook and I use my middle name (Lance) when talking to my family which the speech recognizer thought was "Lace." I went to the "Add word" function on the language bar, typed in my name, recorded the word with my mic, and it's recognized it every time since then. It seems to work best with a mic and the mouse. You can choose windows and do some functions that are easy to choose. I just hated having to select the line in Excel and right click to delete a line since the click area is so small. And just being able to say "Scroll Down" is really cool when your'e scanning. Obviously I'm impressed...heh...
Let's hope it works for me too, as I m neither british or american when it comes to my accent, plus i have a very very deep voice that fucks up sensors. e.g. when i speak while playing Donkey Konga/DK Jungle beat, the microphone thinks i ve clapped
These are some results: I said: "white on white translucent black capes, back on the rack" it wrote: " White on white translucent black tapes back on the rack " TEST 2: The computer typed: On my desk there is a Sony PlayStation and a Nintendo GameCube and a Microsoft exports 360 Funny how the word XBOX isnt included
This sounds great ! I'm going to set it up as well. Should make writing the reviews for my site much less time consuming. Yakumo
I don't know mates. I might have a shitty microphone or my accent might be bad, or many other reasons. It's a simplistic tool which unfortunately does not include technical legal terms, and although I tried to dictate simple paragraphs, the mistakes are too many. I might stick with typing for now, as I have a paper to hand-in tomorrow morning. Yakumo, please check ur PMS
One thing I forgot to say....it's only set up to work with American English at this point. Also, for technical terms it probably won't be of much use yet. I'm using it mostly for voice commands. I thought the dictation function would be fun but I really won't be using it to any real extent. If you use it with the keyboard and mouse you can reduce quite a few clicks.
I played around with a voice program many years ago, didn't knew there was this option! I'll get a mic and try now, thanks for the info Japan-games
