So empty! And, no teenagers or kids? Is this on the street? At least the arcades sited in malls are full of kids. And the ashtrays! OMG. Thank goodness smoking is forbidden here inside buildings... Really weird how the guy smokes and wears a mask.
This is a gamers arcade that kids are not allowed to enter. Adults only. It's in a major shopping area on the main street. If I go now at 9pm it will be packed.
Niiiice, always said if i won the lottery i'd open up an arcade around here, but i'd need bouncers with how rough it is in these parts haha
It's weird how my interesting in Japanese Arcades has dwindled since I found out the American scene, while not in the best shape is still alive and well and on an upswing. Thanks to You Tube Channels like Arcade Impossible and John's Arcade. Although for fighters I still prefer the sanwa/semitsu set up.
Yakumo ... What's it cost on average to play an arcade machine? Do these machines take coin and banknotes or do you purchase tokens to play? ... and thanks for sharing these pics. It's been a long time since I've been in an arcade - none around here except for the two or three machines that are available at the local bars.
It's just... so pretty... Would love to get my hands on one of those candy cabs. Still conflicted whether I want an American or Japanese styled MAME cabinet, might just have to cave, spend the extra grand and make one of each
They range from 30 to 100 yen a game. Even some of the games such as Melty Gear are only 30 yen per credit. To give you an idea, a can of coke or whatever will cost 130 yen.
... I like how they put the ashtray way beyond the arcade machine........ It's a good way to avoid the players burning off and leaving burn marks on the machine, sometimes some arcade machines are bended due to burns caused by cigarettes.
Yeah, it's surprising just how clean the machines are considering all the smoking that goes on in that place.
Cool pictures. I could hang out in an arcade like that for awhile. Also happy to see the ashtrays. Reminds me that there was a time when... even if someone smoked, they were accommodated and welcomed into a business as equals, instead of expelled and hissed at as over-taxed 2nd class citizens.
That's exactly what I was going to say! While I'm not judging, there's clearly a vendetta here haha. I mean, there used to be smoking sections in establishments. So while I do understand the sentiment, smokers weren't exactly treated as "equals." I guess as a smoker that would be a better option than simple outright refusal, but that's as off-topic as I'll take this one.
No they weren't. Until recently, smokers held all the power and made all the clean air breathing decisions for others. Don't like the smoke? Well, you can just leave. Want to go to a casino? Well, there is a "non-smoking" section right over there between the two areas with the heaviest smoker concentrations. Oh, and smokers will still smoke there too. Non-smoking casino you say? Don't worry, the smokers will hold their cigarettes out of sight so you don't have to see them while you choke.
The owners of the establishment could have banned that from happening at any given point. Most chose not to because there was a demand for it until governments decided for them and stepped in to ban it indoors. Then a few years later, another 10 feet from buildings. Then 30 feet, with crippling fines for not being in compliance. No one is demanding public bans on gluttony or disgusting speak even when it's... pretty disturbing to sit next to people who are stuffing their faces with triple portions of food or screaming at their ex on the phone. Smoking has been long-banned on trains and buses, yet many are still choking because a good number of people decide not to bathe or wear deodorant. No one seems to be getting up on a moral soapbox about how the lottery, the casino, and the gambling addiction hotlines are all run by the state. Agents are dispatched to fine and shut down stores who sell cigarettes to minors. No such agents, fines, or penalties exist for lottery tickets (which, last time I checked, you're supposed to be 18 with ID to play). Lottery tickets can still be bought in vending machines that have no ID check, they can also be heavily marketed on TV and presented in ways that attract the eyes of children (who usually do a good job of pressuring their parents into buying some). No one seems to have a moral obligation to walk up to strangers and lecture them on the consequences of drinking. Even total inebriation is still marketed as this cute/funny thing in our culture when the consequences of just "one wild night", aka the type of scene that's been glorified by pop culture forever (i.e. The Hangover), can flat out destroy someone in addition to several others' lives. At least the zero-tolerance smoking agenda has lead to better health. Now, a hammered loser can stumble into his house and beat his wife with clean, healthy lungs! And quite frankly, why should they fight to strangle the freedoms enjoyed by their fellow man? No vendetta, nor ill-intention in any event towards anyone in writing this. Pick your poison, know it well. We all have one, it just makes the self-righteous condemnation towards smoking pretty unwarranted. Separation of church and state? Separation of church and smoke.
There is a huge and absolute difference between hurting yourself and hurting yourself + others. Smoking hurts the smoker + everyone around them. Having grown up with all but one family member being a two pack a day smoker and suffering asthma and allergies because of it, your self righteous crusade is laughable. And please, don't start with the "but no one complains about ____" fallacy that smokers get into.
