I live and work in Tokyo, and have a friend who works for a company here, looking for new people to bring on. If you want to live in Japan, and can program well in Perl, this would be an ideal starting point! Relocation [flights etc] are inclusive. The position is in Yokohama, Japan (30 mins on train from Tokyo central zone).

The position is for a software developer (primarily Perl), to work on a large-scale data processing system for on of Japan's largest mobile telecommunications networks. The project is still relatively young so there is the potential for influencing design decisions. There are opportunities to work with cutting edge hardware. successful applicants will be provided with the necessary working visa for Japan, accommodation, national health insurance and a very competitive salary.

Strong Perl and Linux skills are a must.
A bachelors degree with honours or equivalent in Computer Science or a related field.
Strong software engineering skills/background and understanding of software design principles.
Experience with either PostgreSQL or strong experience in another SQL based RDBMS.
Fluent English (knowledge of Japanese and/or Chinese would be a plus).
Willingness to learn and pick-up new technology.
The ability to work well within a team.
Willing to relocate to Yokohama Japan.

If you are interested in the position, please send me a PM, or better yet, a CV!

Some how I doubt it. That's almost 8.5 million yen per year. New guys don't normally get any where near that much when they enter a Japanese company. Saying that, they may get quarterly bonuses at 1 million yen a pop or half year bonus.

Japanese guys don't. White guys in gaishikei do, if they have a few years under their belt.

I'm shocked they can't find this person locally. It's not a skill set everyone is going to have, but it's not the niche either. However, if you hire someone with high level Perl skills, their code might be the ugliest hunk of shit ever.

    I'm not :)

They're probably offering a lower wage. The smarter gaijin are making more money doing the same type of work for a financial or something similar.

do it, man. Do it. I wish I could code enough to do this. If you know Perl, the experience of living over there could be awesome.

    Do it!

Semi-at-best employed tech guys are abundant though. It isn't America... at Perl is far from rocket science. When's the last time you've been to a bar? They're filled with head hunters crying the blues.

Depressing. Plenty of techs that had to leave. One friend had 18 months to find a job, and was willing to take a substantial pay cut. :|

IT guys that can speak near fluent Japanese is what's missing. There are a bunch of IT guys who can't and no one wants to hire them anymore when you have bilingual new grads coming into the system every year for way less money.

The other problem is that there are way more headhunters than there are jobs lol

Indeed, but there are at least some. But "speaking Japanese" is pretty relative. I usually find the required level is pretty low... but yeah, I also got grilled in an interview once and actually handled the J-part fine. They wanted someone way more geekier than me though. This was also 1999!

    Where the fuck to begin...

Maybe, not my job - that would be part of the negotiations!

I'll get in touch with my friend and see if this position is still available. Please PM me rather than leave a reply here.

These positions are still open. The salary is both competitive and negotiable.

Send me a PM with your name, and CV, and perhaps see you soon in Tokyo :)
