FYI -- this will only work with the official Sony HD. Won't work with any old HD.

Will work with any HDD, if you have a modchip with AUTO ATAD Patching feature. This feature on the modchip lets you use any HDD as the official one, since it patches the ATAD.irx file on the HDD everytime you turn the PS2 on. Then by using the HDD Utility Disc 1.10, you can use the updated PS2 browser, that show the HDD on the browser menu, lets you install game caches (Socom 2, RE:Outbreack, .... ) lets you backup PS1 and PS2 saves, ...

Anyway, you can only play FFXI on the official HDD, mostly because the PlayOnline serials and other stuff that get installed on the PS2. But if you don't care for FFXI, like me, just get a modchip!

PS: Don't confuse the PS2 browser with internet browser.

 

to be honest, I am trying to play FFXI(real version) it came in a sealed box w/ hdd but didnt have that disc. I tried the homebrew disc from ps2ownz but while it lets me format, it doesnt have the software to re-install into HDD (so the PS2 browser recognizes the HDD next to the Memory Card) If you reinstall Playonline, you cannot access it from its spot on the PS2 Browser

Yep, PS2OWNZ (Now PS2NFO) HDD TOOLS only formats the HDD. This lets you use 80% of the features of official HDD Utility Disc 1.10.

What are those? HDD Recognized, possibility of making Folders on the HDD and backup PS1 and PS2 saves and install game caches.

What you can't do with it? Upgrade the DVD Drivers (curiously it installs in the memory card, instead of the HDD), and use FFXI.

I suggest you to try to use the HDD Utility Disc 1.10, asking for someone to let you test it, before deciding to buy it. Although i doubt FFXI will work, since it probably have some security stuff behind it, that only lets you install the game, on the official HDD. I might be wrong, but like i said, test it before you buy it.

 

If this is the case then your best bet is to return it to the retailer for another copy. The utility disc is supposed to come in the box with the drive.
