    Exactly. :)

Seeing as I've held a unit in the past with the code running on it, I know it at least made it to demo form. And anyone who's followed my postings also knows that I can make it worth your while if you have it to trade. Since the Game.com collector market is virtually nil, I'm not expecting much in the way of replies, but if anyone is going to have it, chances are they know about this board.

Did the MGS version make it to demo form? I would love some additional screens for it.

Anyone have screens or *crosses fingers* videos of these games in action? I never knew they existed before this.

Yeah, the Metal Gear screens can be found on that absolutely abysmall MGS fanboy site, "thesnakesoup"

If you can temporarily blind yourself so as to not read his inane ramblings, he has some screens. In case you can't tell, I loathe that awful site.

Though I have no idea where he got them. Apparently off the game.com box?

    Heres a linky:
    http://www.thesnakesoup.com/?section=articles&content=mgsgamecom

While we are on the subject of unreleased Metal Gear games, can anyone confirm or disprove the existance of the following:

    * Snake's Revenge for the Famicom - it was never officially released in Japan, despite being made by Konami of Japan back in the day. Apparently work began around '89, based on various clues. SR initiated Kojima to make MG2SS, and adverts for MG2SS can be found in Famicom leaflets from around January 1990. Implying that work began on MG2SS sometime in '89, implying work on SR began earlier than that. Does a Japanese proto of Snake's Revenge exist?
(and I don't mean Famiclone copies of the US game in a bootleg Famicom cartridge. Ive seen plenty of Western exclusive like that, but its still just the Western game in a different cartridge.)

    * The Amiga version of Metal Gear 1. All we have are screenshots from the IBM PC box, which features some screenshots from the Amiga game, showing it to be a port of the NES game. They could have been mock-ups, but if an Amiga version of MG1 does exist, then it is arguably the most graphically advanced of all the MG1 games/ports. It was never released, and I know of no ROM groups who have it.

This makes a total of 3 MG games, which I am trying to get info on.

Oh, and sorry for hijacking this thread.....

  8. I can't cite any resources, but the story I always heard was that since Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake was released on the MSX (which, despite having a few models released stateside, had a following of maybe 3 people), Konami decided not to even bother with an English localization. Metal Gear: Snake's Revenge was then made for the American audiences that enjoyed the first so they'd at least have a 'sequel.' I'm not sure which team did the design, but Hideo Kojima was involved in no aspect of it, and as you most likely know, Konami does not include Snake's Revenge in the official Metal Gear canon.

As for Symphony Of The Night on Game.com, a handful of screenshots and a bit of history can be found here: http://www.vgmuseum.com/mrp/2/canceled-page3.htm An interesting thing to note is that there was already a cartridge design finalized for the game when it was canned.

    Thanks for SOTN pics. :)

As for MG, allow me to indulge in some fanboy rambling....

Snake's Revenge was actually developed before MG2SS on the MSX. Kojima has catagorically stated in interviews that he

    a) likes SR and regards it as being faithfull to the MG ethos, which it is, and I will explain why in a bit

    b) That development of SR began BEFORE MG2SS, and not only that, but SR was in fact the catalyst that innitated the development of MG2SS. Kojima relates how he bumped into a fellow Konami employee on a train station, who informed him that he was making an unnoficial sequel to MG1. They chatted, and Kojima decided to make a true sequal as a result of this.

As for sources? I have about 50 txt files on my HDD with bits of info and interviews that I harvested for info, but for a concise telling, just read the comprehensive article I wrote for GamesTM:
    http://www.totalgames.net/pma/21747

As I mention there, SR plays more like a sequel to the MSX original than the NES game, since it refers to Metal gear as a walking tank, as opposed to computer system which was in the NES. It also has several things in common with the MSX original. Plus it features things that would go on to be incorporated into later games. MGS3 actually reminds me A LOT of SR.

So really, we technically owe the entire existence of the Playstation games to SR. Ironic no? Anyway, my ramblings about the ad leaflefts reveal some interesting things. SR was released in 90. But development must have started as early as late '88 even. Certainly 89. Since there are advertisements for MG2SS from around January 1990. Now, if SR began development before MG2SS... well, you get the picture. It began development long before its US release, which implies to me that they were translating it from the Japanese version that never got released. But hey. Thats just speculation baby! Theres plenty of other even more wierd stuff I discovered, but that is for another topic.

I personally really enjoy SR, hence my interest in finding out if there is a Famicom beta in existence.

Isn't it funny that Konami were to bring Symphony Of The Night to the Game.com but they wouldn't do a western Saturn release ! They said that they couldn't afford it? Afford what? The game was transalted for the PSX. So they never brought Symphony Of The Night to PAL land but instead brought out some shite with a rabbit !

Also the Game.com had some very good licenses for it's time. It makes you wonder if they had put as much effort in to the shitty screen that they had put in to getting all the licenses then things could have turned out better for them.

He made about fifty claims in the above post, which one or ones do you seriously, seriously SERIOUSLY doubt? Because as far as I'm aware, they're all true.

I doubt that Kojima would base the Metal Gear Solid series off a game that wasn't even released in Japan, and isn't even thought of as a true sequel or even part of the main series.

Looking for more info on the Game.com, It seems that the system had a LOT of games canned. In fact, while as 20 different games were released, 21 went unreleased, here is a list of them:

    A Bug's Life
    Castlevania Symphony of The Night
    Command and Conquer: Red Alert
    Deer Hunter
    Furbyland
    Giga Pets Deluxe
    Godzilla
    Holyfield Boxing
    Madden Football '99
    Metal Gear Solid
    Mulligan's Golf Challenge
    Mutoids
    Name That Tune
    NASCAR Racing
    NBA Hangtime
    NBA live '99
    Rugrats
    Small Soldiers
    The X-Files
    Turok: Dinosaur Hunter
    WCW Wresting

Furbyland has me curious due to its subject matter being toys with 'revolutionary ai' (anyone remember those things? They were very popular back in the mid-late 90's). All i've been able to find is a VERY small pic of what is supposedly its proto-cart:

Command and Conquer: Red Alert has me curious as to its play mechanics, as even now with the DS we have yet to play a true handheld RTS game, little lone with a touch screen (which the game would have probably utilized).

One other thing, this is a pic from supposedly some original game.com game, but I havn't been able to find out what that game may be:

I wouldn't feel too bad about MGS and SOTN not getting released...you know they just would have gotten Game.commed (crapped) up anyway. Game.com is alright for Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy...but an action game? Have you seen Sonic the Blurred Hedgehog?

You didn't read my post correctly.

    Also, read the article:
    http://www.totalgames.net/pma/21747

    Lets follow the logic:
    a) SR was developed, though more as a sequal to the MSX game, rather than NES

    b) The mere existence of Snake's Revenge encouraged Kojima to make MG2SS on the MSX2.

    c) Metal Gear Solid was strongly influenced by MG2SS on the MSX2.

    d) The series continued from there.

    e) MGS1 contains the following just like SR: search lights
MGS2 contains the following just like SR: Ship full of MG units, directional microphone
MGS3 contains the following just like SR: jungle setting, combat knife, shotgun, hovering platforms in the jungle, bright orange clothes...

Notice how a, leads to b, which leads to c, and then d and e!

As for him claiming to like the game, I blatantly took that info from 2 other people's interviews. Though in truth, either Kojima, or both of the people who conducted these seperate interviews may have been lying. :p

Anyway, this is the last time I hijack this thread, if there exist the need to continue this fascinating debate, please do start another topic, and then PM a link to it. I do so love the thrill of the debate!

My notes are jumble, I could only find the one link:

    Steven Kent, Gamer's Today
    http://www.gamerstoday.com/world_tour/kojima/index.html

I take it then you fall into the catagory of "Games player who absolutely despises Snake's Revenge"?

back to the Game.com discussion, I assume it was the first games machine to utilise a stylus, long before the DS?

To answer the question about MGS, no, AFAIK there was never running code for MGS on Game.com, however I could be wrong on that point.

Now, if you all are done whining about which version of Metal Gear was better could someone please get to digging up a SOTN proto cart to sell me? ;)
