I doubt the game was leaked out by any or former employees of Blizzard. The Russian animation house only handled animation and sent them over to Blizzard hwere they put the game together, so its highly unlikely that the Russian company they hired might have gotten a hold of an alpha/beta build. Blizzard is very good in keeping secrets as well as not divulging any info on cancelled games. Anything else is just speculation.
my understanding is that the game fell apart because of the very poor communication between blizzard and the russians, blizzard would request art from the russian art house and then when they got the art back, some of it was useless as the areas they were going to be used for had been scrapped or modified already, which lead to its eventual cancellation in the long run, as i understand
Just like the Wiki said. When they hired Steve, he concluded the game needed to be redone. Anyway, I wouldn't be too suprised if the artwork the russian company made was somehow leaked into the underground BBS back in the day.
