I'm trying to sort out something for a friend in Asia. She's trying to catch up with her favourite TV programs using the BBCi service, 4 on demand and itv.com Unfortunately they are restricted to the UK and I'm guessing they do this by checking the ISP. Is it possible to view them using a proxy connection? I don't really understand how to set one up or use one but I know what they do. Any help would be appreciated, it's not a matter of life and death but would be nice to sort out.
If not do what I do and join http://www.uknova.com/wsgi/index It's a torrent site (LEGAL) with a very high bandwidth that hosts all British TV shows that aren't on or coming to DVD in the next few months. That's how I watch Top Gear every week (well, it's finished now but will be back soon). They do have a limited membership so you may need to wait for a free space but it's well worth it. You can get everything from Bob the Builder to the ITN News ! There's even classic stuff on there from time to time from out of print videos. Not that long ago I got a really old Alexi Sayle live video. Yakumo
No it isn't. It's just restrictive to just things that haven't been released yet / out-of-print / only just been on. Still illegal, but of a much lower priority for copyright lawyers what with them stalking movie and music pirates. However, I agree it's a great site for stuff but you could be waiting a while before a place opens up - they are very restrictive in the number of users. As for a proxy - perfectly viable, however it'll probably be too slow to make it worthwhile on open public sites. You'd be better off setting up your own proxy on a quiet machine in your own house for her if you're truly her friend
Get a sling box. They are technically legal (loop hole?) in the states as they only allow one single connection.
Well, fair enough comment but that site is no more illegal than recording the shows yourself from TV. Personally I see nothing wrong what so ever in that site since nobody loses any money. No pay-per-view stuff is up for download so all you can get is stuff you'd be able to see for free anyway :033: Yakumo
That site may be operating in a grayish area of legality, but thanks to Sony wanting to promote their Betamax system, home recording for personal use is not even slightly illegal (in the US & for now, anyway...). BTW, typing as a slingbox user, they are great for this kind of thing - but of course, your slingbox needs to be located where your desired TV feed is...
I've tried a proxy before and they're hit and miss. I was able to get through to NBC.com to watch new episodes of The Office but it didn't work when I was trying to watch something from CNN.com that was restricted to US watchers only. By the way, NBC offers streaming for of a lot of their popular shows for free. For The Office, for example, you can watch all of season 4 from their website. Hopefully a sign of things to come? I can only imagine the hits NBC gets from that service.
I`ve got one of these Freaking awesome, can watch all my TV on my mobile phone  I think there are newer versions were you can connect more suppliers But sure it is still one connection(viewing) per slingbox
Yeah, it'll work in theory if you use a transparent proxy. You may need to change your location settings, too. UKNova is cool, well it was anyway. I lost my membership as I couldn't get online when I was on holiday - was 60gb in credit, too. Ah well. Maybe my old video game topic still exists over there, although I can't update it any more!! Yeah, their stuff is technically illegal, albeit tolerated, for now.
Always thought of getting one and having my dad set it up. I'd have to pay their cable bill. Most of what I want is available elsewhere anyway. It would also be hard to get my sister who lives in Europe off of it. Paul
