i just think people freak for anything. i mean, c'mon! have you ever heard about caricatures? a
drawing method that consist of accentuing the lines of a caracter. if you can do this to white politicians, then why couldn't you apply this to everyone, black people included? i mean, if we can't laugh about traits and if we need to close our eyes about facts on the blacks, then how can every man be treated equally? too much cencure or defense can be a sort of rasism too. and even the word racism or racist can be ''racist'' (i would like to use another word here, but i simply can't) since black people aren't in a different race, nor any other people of color, there's just no race, we're all humans dot at the line. skin color difference us as much as hair colors.

and yes, memin pinguin rulz!! :D

    Not really surprised here.

I live in Guadalajara, which is a racist city. Brown-skinned people don't get into bars (because they have to "keep an image"), are routinely inspected by cops on the street, and are pretty much looked down upon by society (Edit: this menas the media and institutions teach us brown is somehow inferior, poor). This is not the norm in our minds, but it is in the minds of the "ruling" class: rich white foreigners, or rich white foreigner -wannabe's
And yeah, the party in the government of this state (Jalisco) is the same as Fox's party, only they've been in power here for like 12 years. They amount to the political equivalent of the further right of your Republican party.
Fox's government embarassing Mexico internationally? Once again, I'm not surprised. He's said and done so much stupid shit, I'm sure he's only in power because it's good for and accepted by 1) Rich Business people, 2)The American Government, 3)The Church. He and his party are elitist, classist, racist... hell, part of his "proud" proposals was to send mexicans to work as gardeners to the U.S. These people believe we're inferior just because we're mexicans - and they're not afraid to show it and give our country away.
A former classmate of mine works as a waiter up north, and he makes 10 times my salary. This probably means Fox is doing his job screwing us brown-skinned folks, huh?

Now, about the Memín stamp... Really, now some people in the american media are just pushing it. Memín's been around for like... 60 years. You know, about the same time the same type of comics were published in the states. This is just a measure to promote some sort of anti-immigrant agenda. It wouldn't surprise me if it was that fucking bigot Lou Dobbs who started this shit.
Now, I'm sure african americans would find Memin offensive in the american context. In the mexican context, his aspect is really not offensive, because, first of all, he's the good guy in the comic, and second of all, to most mexicans (not including those in power and a "white" minority) it's not "offensive" to be black or any other race. Sure, TV and Magazines show Mexico as if everybody here were the Aryan race, but we're not a discriminating people, outside of some very icky right-wing groups who unfortunately are in power today.

Edit: And I forgot to add that being offended about Memín is like if Germans and Japanese were offended by old Captain America comics, or as if Mexicans were offended by that old Dick Tracy cartoon where the Mexican Stereotype guy did all the work.

Out of curiosity why do you call Lou Dobbs a bigot? Sure he's one of the only journalists to speak out on illegal immigration but I've never heard him say anything racist about hispanic people themselves.

I've, however, heard him blame mexicans for bringing disease and crime into the otherwise clean U.S. To him, Mexicans are not much more than sick criminals coming to steal jobs.

And the real zinger here is that he doesn't say it directly, but condescendently. A lot of his remarks are not downright racist if taken directly, but many of his insinuations, and his constant seeing the trees but not the forest (meaning, to blame Mexican immigrants and chinese workers for the downfall of american society without looking inside first) are just too much to handle. And he eats up this type of comments and situations, because then he can continue blaming all of Mexico for the fallout of the government's ineficacy.

If he's not a bigot, at least he does know how to push my own particular, disease-ridden, criminal, job-stealing buttons.

I did find a bit of truth in his "exporting America" series, though - because the same is happening here in Mexico - and, well, it's sort of one of the reasons the working class mexicans leave the country.

Once again I don't really think he blames the individual as much as he blames the institution in this case the governments and their leaders. The Mexican government and Vincenti Fox for not just turning a blind eye but at times actively promoting illegal immigration and George Bush and the US government for ignoring the problem and pandering to the Latino population to get votes. I also think that if it was China, Russia, or Canada was where the majority of illegal immigrants were coming from his stories would be the same.

Lou Dobbs is a total asshole. God, I hate that whole network. If it wasn't for the Simpsons I wouldn't watch FOX at all. Every one of thier people is a total shill for the thieves in power, Dobbs, Bill O'Reily, don't beleive anything those dirtbags say.

Okay, angry rant is over. I'm not about to tell anyone which political philosophy to beleive in. But seriously though, those people are liars.

On topic: Not really sure how I feel about this stamp. Back in the day there used to be a chain of resturants called Sambo's, the mascot was taken from the nursery rhyme Little Black Sambo, and was drawn in that caricuture style. At the time (late 1960s) that wasn't considered racist, but eventually enough people got angry and they changed the name and mascot to something else.

So, you could look at this stamp in two ways, either as an expression of racism, which no doubt many people have, as that seems to be the gut reaction response, or in a historical context to show how much attitudes have changed since then. A few months ago someone posted "the most racist auction ever" which was this children's book from like 1896 or something that showed black people in this manner. But like that book, this stamp shouldn't be considered "racist," but in my opinion should be seen more as "history."

So when you see this stamp, is it offensive becasue it's saying all black people look like that? Or does it disgust you becasue it illustrates that no matter how far society has come there are still certain parts of it where these attitudes are still considered normal?

    Just something to think about.

latino vote? you know that only americans can vote right? so therefor the latinos that vote are americans, and really could care less about inmigrants , and actually they do, they really dont care about them and some of them are even racist.

Yeah I know but the Republicians are trying to build up a Latino voter base much like the Democrats have done with the Black community and they don't want to rock the boat.
